12-year-old arrested on firearms charges in Scunthorpe

A 12-year-old has been arrested in Scunthorpe for possession of a firearm without a licence.

Operation Yellowfin is a dedicated task force tackling antisocial and criminal use of motorbikes. Officers on patrol in the Ashby area were alerted to two people acting suspiciously on a motorcycle on October 16.

Following a search of the area with the assistance of the National Police Air Services, a 20-year-old man and 12-year-old boy were found in the Lilac Avenue area. Officers had reportedly discovered and seized a firearm while arresting the two.

The pair were arrested for possession of a firearm without a licence. The 20-year-old was also arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle. Both have been released on police bail while Humberside Police investigations are ongoing.

Councillors questioned the effectiveness of Operation Yellowfin earlier this month. A new 2024/24 Youth Justice Plan is being welcomed to help keep children out of court and reduce reoffending.

Detective Inspector Simon Archer said: “We continue to work hard to tackle motorcycle-related crime and remain committed to making our communities safer.

“Operation Yellowfin provides us with information and intelligence that helps us bring offenders to justice, and we do not take these crimes lightly.”

Humberside Police are appealing to anyone who was in the area around the time of the incident, or anyone who has CCTV or dashcam footage that may assist with their enquires to contact us on our non-emergency number 101 quoting log 263 of 16 October.
