£80k Government emergency rough sleeper funding help for northern Lincolnshire this winter

More than £80,000 Government emergency rough sleeper funding is going to northern Lincolnshire councils this winter.

The Government has boosted its Rough Sleeping Winter Pressures Funding from £10m to £30m this winter to help councils increase the use of emergency accommodation to house rough sleepers. The cash is going to over 280 councils, including North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire.

The extra resource will help support frontline workers providing vital services on the ground, which will see more people sleeping rough into safe and secure accommodation with warm beds, hot meals and medical treatment. A North East Lincolnshire Council spokesperson has said the fund has already helped one local person who was sleeping rough.

In November, North East Lincolnshire was allocated £26,884 from the fund. It was identified as one of the areas of the country facing the greatest pressures this winter on rough sleeping.

This has now been increased to £63,475 in total. North Lincolnshire Council is also now receiving cash from the fund, £19,599. A North East Lincolnshire Council spokesperson said: “We can confirm that North East Lincolnshire Council has recently received an extra £36,000 on top of the £26,000 it received at the end of 2024.

“This is part of the Government’s allocation of an extra £20million to prevent rough sleeping – allowing local authorities to find solutions to support people in a life away from the streets. The Home Options team will be working with local partners to carry out additional street outreach to identify rough sleepers and ensure support is available with the offer of accommodation during periods of cold weather.”

The spokesperson added the team would also be putting support in place for those at risk of sleeping rough. This includes offering some financial and budgeting support to prevent people losing their accommodation.

“They will help these people to access the private sector where rent in advance or a deposit is a barrier to do so. It is also important that the council and its partners further support those who have been sleeping rough transition successful into long term accommodation.

“The council has already used some of this money to assist a local person sleeping on our streets into accommodation. This person will continue receiving support from the Home Options team and their partners to ensure they remain in their new home.

Over the last year, almost 360,000 households have approached their local council for help with homelessness, according to the Government. Those experiencing homelessness or rough sleeping are eight to 12 times more likely to die prematurely, particularly from chronic cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.

Homelessness minister Rushanara Ali said: “Behind every sad rough sleeping statistic, there is a person who has been let down by the system for far too long. This government is more determined than ever to turn the tide on years of failure to properly invest in our frontline services.

“That is why I am tripling the emergency funding from £10 million to £30 million for councils to help the most vulnerable into safe and secure housing with warm beds, hot meals, and specialist care.” The emergency cash injection builds on the largest-ever investment in homelessness prevention services of almost £1 billion for this year, including over £185 million for the Rough Sleeping Prevention and Recovery Grant. North Lincolnshire Council were also contacted for comment.
