An American truck-pulling stunt by a team of volunteers has raised over £3,370 so far for Scunthorpe’s Lindsey Lodge Hospice.

Legendary strongman and fundraiser from the town Ian “Chalkie” White MBE organised the event, which saw 16 people tow the seven-tonne truck for four miles, taking in the centre of Scunthorpe. Chalkie, 73, who has previously been a prolific charity truck puller himself but now suffers with ill health, said: “The truck pull went 100 per cent, apart from the weather.

“People turned out to watch. When we came to the high street there was a bakery shop and these ladies came out with cakes on trays to give everyone while they were still pulling.”

Chalkie had particular thank-yous for Tesco, for supplying water and chocolate biscuits; HDL for the back-up vehicle driven by Ian Donnelly; Andy Graves for the loan of the truck and “all the ambulance drivers who came out to pull”.

He said: “I’ve never known anything like it. I can’t thank people more, everyone who was involved in the event one way or another.”

Bucket collections during the event, held on Sunday, September 15, and sponsorship, has so far brought in a total of £3,371.66. Chalkie expects more to come in for Lindsey Lodge, which described the effort as “absolutely amazing”.

Kirsty Walker, head of fundraising and marketing at the hospice, said: “We are incredibly grateful for the fantastic sum raised by Chalkie and his team. Fundraisers like this are vital to support the running of the hospice, with £4.8m needed to be raised every year to keep the hospice running and provide the vital specialist care for the people of North Lincolnshire.

“It has been a great experience to work with Chalkie, whose legendary reputation raising money in the community precedes him and we are honoured that he has chosen Lindsey Lodge to support.” Friend and supporter of Chalkie’s charity efforts for many years, Glyn Morgan, captured all the action on the day, and a thank-you reception where certificates were handed out, in these pictures you can see below.

William shows off unbelievable arm playing American football with youngsters

The Prince of Wales showed off his “unbelievable arm” playing non-contact American football with youngsters at an NFL event supporting children living in deprived parts of the UK. Youngsters shouted “what a throw” as acting quarterback William lobbed the ball across the pitch to his teammate on Tuesday morning. Children from Birmingham, Manchester and London gathered to play NFL flag, the non-contact version of American football, at Kennington Park hockey pitch, south London, in the community event. It was organised by NFL Foundation UK which supports people aged 12 to 20 by giving them access to the “fast paced, inclusive and easy to access” sport. William told Phoebe Schecter, GB women’s flag football captain, that he played American football on the beach in summer when he was younger, but shrugged off his sporting ability and said “I try my hand at most (sports)” though “not very well”. Ms Schecter disagreed, and later told the PA news agency: “Honestly, Prince William was great – his arm strength is unbelievable, when he let that first ball rip I couldn’t believe it. “Honestly I think if we had better receivers around we would have had multiple touchdowns happening, but his ability to take control of the offence, going into a completely unfamiliar territory really, calling the cadence, receiving the ball, doing a hand-off at one point, making those tactical decisions – it was phenomenal.” She gave the prince technical tips including “embracing your inner Shakira” by moving the hips. After some coaching on how to throw – from young girls as well as Ms Schecter – he put two balls in the net during a drill. The children and Ms Schecter cheered and gave him high-fives as an onlooker shouted “that’s good coaching”. William stood in the crowd and laughed “that’s my NFL career”. Louis Rees-Zammit, a Welsh rugby star-turned NFL Jacksonville Jaguars player, only scored one. He later told PA: “I mean (William) can throw the ball, he can throw the ball a lot better than me, so thankfully in my role I just have to run and catch, so I don’t have to throw the ball – I got one in so he definitely beat me”. UK-based NFL representatives Will Stone and Henry Hodgson gave the prince an American football to take home to the children. William thanked them and said: “Never go home empty handed, that’s a crucial motto. They will love that, we’ll do some practicing at home – see how many windows I can smash.” NFL flag will make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Los Angeles games. William said the Olympic flag football games “will be amazing” and “I hope it gets a lot of coverage – that everyone sees”. As the children continued to play on the pitch, he added: “It’s so good to see all the women getting more involved in it.” Ms Schecter later said: “When we teach kids who are, say, year four, year five, and upwards, it’s the young girls that really shine because they’ve not been in a football academy their whole lives. “So they come into it and show those leadership skills, they’re telling people what to do, where to go, they’ve got all these great values that are part of the sport and it’s just really quite beautiful to see. “There’s so many opportunities, where it’s playing for your national team, travelling with clubs, or, you know, LA 28 Olympics – that’s a huge opportunity for everyone, it’s endless.” NFL Foundation UK is the league’s first international charity organisation and is celebrating its three-year anniversary. London groups HR Academy, Connect Stars, and Big Kid had teams at Tuesday’s event, as well as Solidarity Community Association in Bolton and Birmingham’s Saathi House. More than 20 million people play NFL flag across 100 countries and the NFL’s official flag football programme is currently played in more than 650 UK schools, involving more than 60,000 boys and girls. American football has an increasing presence in the UK with NFL London games taking place at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium. Rogue funeral directors free to keep bodies in their garage inquiry warns

Funeral directors could work at home and keep bodies in their garages, an inquiry chairman warned, as he called for urgent regulation of the industry. Sir Jonathan Michael, who is investigating how people who have died are looked after in the wake of necrophiliac killer David Fuller’s mortuary abuse, said he was “personally shocked” to find funeral directors do not need a licence, qualifications or training, and described the sector is an “unregulated free-for-all”. He said many people would be appalled to find the sector goes unchecked and anyone can set themselves up as a funeral director. Publishing his latest findings on Tuesday, he urged the Government to bring in a regulator for funeral directors in England as a “matter of urgency” after uncovering “horrifying examples of poor practice”. Branding the system “fundamentally flawed”, he told the PA news agency the lack of controls were “unacceptable” and warned it had given rise to “rogue” funeral directors operating with impunity. “There are no organisations in England with the power to prevent funeral directors operating on the basis of poor practice or neglect not deemed to be criminal. “We need a regime that will not tolerate any form of abuse or any practices that compromise the security and dignity of the deceased,” he said. Although overall he found the funeral sector to be a “caring” profession and said in general people who had died were being treated with “kindness, dignity and respect”, he warned there were “exceptions” and his conclusions could indicate “systemic failure” to protect people who died through a lack of standard policies. “We can’t avoid the fact that there were some really quite horrifying examples of poor practice,” he said in a PA interview. The report highlighted alleged incidents including a funeral assistant taking photos of a person being embalmed, of people being left to decompose or covered in mouldy sheets, and the sexual assault of a dead woman by a funeral director in the 1990s. “The fact is that anyone can set themselves up as a funeral director,” he said. “They could do it from their home and keep the bodies of the deceased in their garage without anybody being able to stop them. That cannot be right.” Sir Jonathan is scrutinising funeral directors, private mortuaries and ambulances as part of a probe into Fuller’s crimes. The Government launched the public inquiry after the maintenance worker sexually abused the bodies of more than a hundred women and girls aged between nine and 100 while employed at the now-closed Kent and Sussex Hospital and the Tunbridge Wells Hospital, in Pembury, between 2005 and 2020. The first phase of the inquiry, which looked at his employer Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust, found Fuller was able to offend for 15 years without being caught due to “serious failings” at the hospitals he worked at. Sir Jonathan said the latest report followed “distressing” allegations of neglect as police investigate a funeral directors in Hull. Humberside Police said detectives had been working “around the clock” since concerns were raised at Legacy Independent Funeral Directors in March “about the storage and management processes relating to care of the deceased at the funeral directors”. The inquiry chairman said it was “right and proper” that looking into Fuller “led to questions about the security and dignity of the deceased”. Setting out how the regulator should have the power to issue licences, demand compulsory standards, inspect funeral directors and take enforcement action, Sir Jonathan said he hopes publishing the report will help ministers and funeral homes to “take steps that assure the public that the sector is fit for purpose and will not tolerate any form of abuse or practice which compromises the security and dignity of the deceased, including that caused by neglect”. It should be mandatory for customers to be given information about how funeral directors will care for their loved ones and what measures are in place to protect them so the sector is more transparent in how it operates, the report added. Industry bodies welcomes the calls for a regulator although the National Association of Funeral Directors said it is “important that it is proportionate”, while the National Society Of Allied And Independent Funeral Directors (SAIF), warned reform should not come at a cost to customers. Health Secretary Wes Streeting said the Government was “committed to preventing any similar atrocities happening again and ensuring that the deceased are safeguarded and treated with dignity”. Officials said the Government would consider the recommendations and respond at a later date. The inquiry, which has so far cost £2.8 million, is yet to publish its final tranche of findings and said it expects ministers to confirm its plans for a regulator before this happens.
