Department Leeds Dock expands workspace with new secret cinema

A former Leeds waterside casino which was transformed into modern offices has opened a new boutique cinema as part of expansion plans.

Department Leeds Dock was launched at the start of last year, having been converted into a workspace hub for creative, media, tech and digital businesses by developers wanting to create a place to work and socialise. The four-storey building has been kitted out with hot desks and permanent desks, premium suites and private studios, as well as social areas with a bar, kitchen and a space which hosts lifestyle pop-ups.

Since Department Leeds Dock opened the building has brought in 60 companies and 360 members from a raft of businesses including digital marketing companies, PR agencies, investment organisations and tech start-ups. Now, having set expansion plans in motion at the end of last year, the developers behind the property have unveiled a new boutique private hire cinema and a suite of new offices at the waterside workspace.

Level 1 and the mezzanine workspaces of Department are now largely occupied while Level 2 opens this Autumn, with 3,860 sqft of more private offices and meeting rooms, a content creator’s suite, podcast facilities, and social areas including phone booths, event space with a bar and private cinema. The new boutique cinema has a capacity of 38 to 60 people with flexible seating arrangements, from plush sofas to theatre-style event seating and a screen with surround sound system.

Department’s general manager, Amy Matthams, said: “The new cinema is an amazing addition to the new Level 2 of Department, giving a unique backdrop for presentations, speaker events or brand launches. It’s also an ideal space for businesses looking for a different kind of party venue this Christmas.

“Our range of fantastic spaces and vibrant location at Leeds Dock means we have the flexibility and capability to make events unique and exciting at Department. You can take over the cinema then head for food and cocktails down at Fearns, enjoy a private pilates session at Condition gym, or even take the team paddleboarding on the Dock nearby. The possibilities are endless.”
