How Halloween fun will bring some serious benefits to poorly Scunthorpe babies

A Scunthorpe mum whose baby was born at 28 weeks aims to raise as much money as possible for her local Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Emma Clay’s son Alfie is now eight and, although needing hospital check-ups every few years, is “mischievous” and into most things boys his age are, including computers and football. Emma already supported the hospital but has now launched a new charity – Scunthorpe NICU Little Warriors – to do as much good as she can for the unit.

This week, she has organised a children’s Halloween party, to be held at Grange Farm Hobbies Centre, on Wednesday, October 30, from 5pm to 7pm. “I’ve already sold 100 tickets,” said Emma.

“The capacity is 250. We’d love to see as many people there as possible – there will be music and dancing, there is a bar and there will be food available to buy.” The next day, on Halloween itself, Emma is holding a Haunted Halloween Garden event at her own home, 101 Bellingham Road, in aid of the charity.

“I’ve been holding that for a lot of years and people can turn up from 5.30pm on the 31st – in fancy dress if they want to – and make donations to the charity if they wish. We’ve got all sorts of things in the garden this year, including projections on the wall and a coffin!”

Looking further ahead, Emma is planning a big Christmas party fundraiser, for up to 350 guests, on Monday, December 23, at the Redbourne Club, in Cemetery Road, from 5.30pm to 8pm. “I’m doing a big buffet for that and we will have visits from Elsa, from Frozen, and Father Christmas,” said Emma, “and a lady is doing hair braiding and there will be face painting.”
