Proposed conversion of Scunthorpe bingo hall among latest planning developments

There are fresh plans to convert a Scunthorpe bingo hall into self-storage.

Permission was refused last year on a separate application to convert the Buzz Bingo site off Brigg Road into self-storage. It was refused solely on the grounds of loss of a community facility in need. It is the town’s last bingo hall.

A new application has been made, this time by London-based Zirconia Trading Ltd. An accompanying document is at pains to make the case that bingo at the site is unviable. However, a Buzz Bingo spokesperson says it has a lease until 2027.

Read on below for a round-up of recent North Lincolnshire planning developments, including a small expansion at The Old Tileworks, Barton-upon-Humber.

Bingo, another self-storage application

The new self-storage application for the Brigg Road bingo hall is detailed. It says the landlord has explored options with other bingo operators, but “there is no demand”. It also contends there is no demand for community uses of the facility’s size.

Buzz Bingo is the site tenant and a document indicates the landlord has viewed it as unviable since a change in lease. It is stated: “The bingo hall is currently let to Buzz Bingo on a flexible basis further to their termination of the lease 2022. This informed the landlord that their business was unviable in Scunthorpe.

“They currently occupy on a flexible tenant favourable basis, to prevent the property being vacant.” Approached for comment, however, a Buzz Bingo spokesperson has said: “We have a lease in place for our Scunthorpe club until 2027. We are pleased to play our part in the local community, welcoming our valued customers and providing a vibrant friendly space for everyone to enjoy.”

On behalf of the applicant, Pod Architects argue conversion to self-storage “will allow for several million pounds worth of investment” in the site.

The Old Tile Works, Barton

The Old Tile Works off Far Ings Road is home to a restaurant, garden centre and workshops. The success of businesses in the workshops area, which include a microbrewery and furniture repairs, has prompted a proposed modest expansion.

Larger premises are required for some of the businesses. Rather than lose these tenants, Gordon Harrison Ltd have proposed creating two larger workshop units, in addition to the existing eight. An extra nine car parking spaces would also be created.

Messingham auction house

Planning approval has been granted to The Old School House’s conversion in Messingham to become the permanent home of Potters Auction Showroom Ltd. The café restaurant previously at The Old School closed at the end of 2023.

Online auctions will be held live inside the building, but members of the public will not attend in person to bid. Similar to the Old Tile Works proposed expansion, the change is a result of business success. Potters moved from Trafford Street, Scunthorpe, earlier in the year because of its expanding inventory.

In Scunthorpe itself, change of use permission has been sought for a hot takeaway in place of a former convenience store in Priory Road. This moved to the opposite side of the building.

MS Properties Ltd is the applicant, and the takeaway it is expected would be open 10am to 11pm, seven days a week. It is estimated it would create four jobs.
