A number of units from Humberside Police came together for two days of action in Scunthorpe town centre last week following concerns raised by residents and businesses around shop theft and drug-related offences in the area.
On Monday, December 2 and Tuesday, December 3, officers from the Neighbourhood Policing Teams, specialist units and local partners carried out focused patrols in the town centre, as a direct response to issues raised by residents and retailers in HumberTalk surveys.
On the first day of action, the operation focused on tackling shop theft in the area. Multiple arrests and enforcement actions were made. The second focused on tackling drug-related offences, with a Passive Drugs Dog assisting officers to identify individuals potentially involved in the supply or possession of drugs.
The two days of action went as follows:
Day One
- One man arrested for possession with intent to supply Class A drugs
- One man arrested for shop theft
- One man arrested for theft and assault
- One man arrested for breaching a Criminal Behaviour Order
- One man arrested for failing to attend court
- Four fines issued for breaching the Public Space Protection Order by cycling in the pedestrian zone of the High Street
Throughout the day, officers in uniform and plain clothes patrolled the town centre. This action was supported by North Lincolnshire CCTV, helping to identify offenders and gather evidence. The work led to several successful stop-and-searches, resulting in arrests and increased visibility.
Day Two
- One man arrested for possession with intent to supply drugs
- One man arrested for possession with intent to supply drugs
- One man summonsed to court for possession of Class C drugs
- One man summonsed to court for possession of Class A drugs
- Seven fines issued for breaching the PSPO by cycling in the pedestrian zone of the High Street
In addition to addressing criminal activity, the operation also helped gather vital information about drug supply in the area.
Community Policing Inspector Tom Stevens said: “The two days have shown what can be achieved when we come together as a community to tackle the issues that matter most. The positive feedback we’ve received from the residents and businesses, has been amazing, and has underlined the positive impact of the days of action.
“I’m incredibly proud of everyone involved, and I know this operation has made our streets safer. It’s been amazing to see the positive energy around this work, we’ll keep doing everything we can to make sure the community feels safe and supported.
“None of this would have been possible without the dedication of everyone involved, the officers, our partners, and, of course, the public. I want to extend my thanks to everyone who made this initiative such a success, and I am positive we can continue to build on this in the future.
