ON AIR NOW:

New Year forecast as cold weather alert issued for northern Lincolnshire

Northern Lincolnshire is set to avoid the worst of the “potentially disruptive” weather affecting many parts of the UK as we welcome in 2025 but it’ll be a windy start to the new year – and it’s soon set to turn a lot colder too.

On Sunday, the Met Office issued a number of weather warnings for wind and snow covering parts of our region. However, on Monday, the forecaster revised its predictions and removed all of northern Lincolnshire from its warning areas though it’s still expected to get windy on New Year’s Eve and into New Year’s Day with gusts of between 40 and 50mph predicted in our region.

Meanwhile, a snow warning that included western parts of the region and others areas of England has been removed entirely and replaced with an alert for heavy rain largely covering areas west of the Pennines as well as much of Wales that will be in effect from 6pm on New Year’s Eve until 6pm on New Year’s Day.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Steve Willington, explained: “A series of low-pressure systems will track across the UK over the next couple of days bringing some potentially disruptive weather.

“Almost the entire UK is covered by at least one weather warning during the coming week, demonstrating that it is a complicated weather forecast at the moment. Although we know today and tomorrow will see heavy rain and strong winds in parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England, plus some snow in parts of Scotland, it’s Wednesday’s weather where there is less confidence.”

The forecast for midnight on New Year’s Day

Though there is still some uncertainty over what exactly the weather will be like when 2025 arrives, in northern Lincolnshire it’s looking like there could some rain around at midnight with the current radar forecast suggesting a 70 per cent chance of showers, possibly heavy in some places.

It is likely to be windy too with gusts of around 40mph expected at midnight, possibly stronger in some parts of our region. Temperatures will be around 9C when the big moment arrives for anyone heading out to welcome in the New Year, though it’ll feel a few degrees cooler due to the strong winds.

Cold weather alert to start the New Year as temperatures plummet

After days of fairly mild conditions for the time of year, 2025 looks set to quickly get off to a very chilly start. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a yellow-level cold weather alert that is currently set to be in effect between 9am on New Year’s Day and 9am on January 4.

This warns of “significant impacts” being possible across health and social care services including risks to elderly people and increased demand for healthcare services.

Temperatures are forecast to rapidly drop through New Year’s Day from 9C at midnight to 3 or 4C by 6pm, before possibly dropping below freezing overnight into Thursday. It will be bitterly cold in the blustery winds too with ‘feel like’ temperatures of around -5C in some parts of our region at times.

It’ll stay cold for at least the rest of the week and the weekend too with daytime highs of just 2 to 4C and overnight lows regularly falling below freezing. However, there should be more settled conditions with plenty of bright spells along with the odd shower, particularly closer to the coast.
