Organisers say they have been “overwhelmed” by the support shown for Scunthorpe’s first Pride event.
The debut festival in Church Square had gone “far better than any of us could ever have imagined”, said event manager Abi Pullin. “We’re all feeling very emotional and overwhelmed to be honest,” she added.
An estimated 3,000-4,000 people are thought to have attended Sunday’s event. Now, it is hoped that the festival will be able to return bigger and even better next year.

Speaking to Scunthorpe Live yesterday, Abi said: “This morning, I went into robot mode and just got everything ready with the team. It’s all worked out thankfully, the turnout has been far better than any of us expected.
“I think the popularity shows how much people in Scunthorpe wanted something like this. The reaction has been amazing. We weren’t sure how people would react, but we felt this was the right time to bring it to Scunthorpe.”
She added: “We wanted to put some life back into [the town] and for everyone to walk away thinking ‘wow’.”
Visitors were able to enjoy entertainment on a main stage, including choirs and drag queens. A food court, a Pride market and charity stalls also proved popular.
Organising the event may have been stressful, but for Abi, an engineer, it was “a good kind of stress”. She added: We’re all volunteers and work a full-time jobs so it’s been quite the task to pull it all together.
“Next year, we’re hoping to do it again, but much bigger and better. However, I think we’ll have a couple of weeks off before starting up again.”
As well as celebrating the LGBTQ+ community as a whole, and the progress made towards equality and acceptance, Pride events can also help to give people the confidence to be who they are.
Abi said: “I’ve suffered myself with homophobia all through life, but I’ve never let it get me down. People have opinions, but you should never let it stop you from being you. I’m happy being who I am and we want to use this as a way of giving people the confidence to be who they are too.”
