Most and least crowded parts of Grimsby and Scunthorpe areas mapped – search for your neighbourhood

An average of 73 people live in an area the size of a football pitch in the most crowded area of North East Lincolnshire, new census data shows.

The New Clee district is the most densely populated part of Grimsby recorded in the 2021 Census. By contrast, the neighbouring district of Weelsby and Old Clee has, on average, just 16 people living in a space the size of a football pitch.

And it will come as no surprise that in rural parts of the Wolds, you’d be better off measuring population density in terms of the number of football pitches you’d need to walk across before finding a single inhabitant. Search our widget below to find out how densely populated your area is.

The Census figures show that more people live in the affluent neighbourhood of Maida Hill in Westminster per square kilometre than anywhere else in England and Wales. Here, on average, the equivalent of 170 people living cheek-by-jowl on a patch of land the same size as a football pitch.

At the other end of the spectrum, only five people live on each sqkm of land in rural Bellingham, Otterburn & Redesdale, in the North East, within the Northumberland National Park. That is the equivalent of one person living alone on a patch of land the same size as 26 football pitches.

Compared with Grimsby, Scunthorpe is relatively cluttered. An average of 41 people live in an area the size of a football pitch in the Scunthorpe Central and Crosby district, while just 14 would share a football pitch in the Scunthorpe Central Park area.
