We tried building our own giant pizza for £9 at The Canopy in Grimsby

In the midst of a cost-of-living crisis in which a basket of food at the supermarket costs more than ever before, families really do need all the help that they can get.

As households up and down the country struggle to make ends meet, it’s always so refreshing to find affordable small businesses that make it their mission to help out where they can – and The Canopy Community Hub does exactly that. Situated at the former site of Tea in the Park, at Grant Thorold Park on the East Marsh, The Canopy opened its doors to the public back in June, and has cemented itself among residents as a thriving community centre where anyone and everyone, from all walks of life, are welcome.

Run by directors Michelle Cook and Jo Blendell, The Canopy Community Hub is open every day, and hosts an array of events and activities, including Lego Club and Simply Dance classes for little ones, fitness and wellbeing workshops for adults and even Doggy Friendly Sundays for dog owners to enjoy precious time with their pooches.

What’s more, The Canopy Kitchen offers a huge range of delicious dishes at such affordable prices, with most breakfast and lunch options averaging around £4. A kids’ picnic box also costs just £3, while two kids’ pancakes will set you back just £2. When I heard about the ‘Build Your Own 14″ Family Size Pizza’ which costs £9 and is made up of five toppings, I made the most of a rainy day during half-term and took my little girl – who would probably eat pizza every day if she could – along.

After being greeted by the friendly staff and taking a seat, I ordered a pot of tea for myself and a blackcurrant Fruit Shoot for my little one. Ordering the build-your-own pizza, I went for a tomato base and chose ham, pineapple, mozzarella cheese, sweetcorn and peppers.

A few minutes later, the pizza base and toppings in bowls were brought over to our table, and we were left to our own devices to build our pizza. It was such a fun activity, and my little girl thoroughly enjoyed it. I couldn’t believe the size of the pizza base and how generous the amount of toppings were – but I wasn’t complaining!

Once we’d finished adding the toppings, the pizza was taken away to be cooked in the oven, and brought out for us ready to eat. The menu isn’t lying when it says ‘family size’ pizza – it was huge. We ate as much as we could, and asked to take the rest home in a takeaway box.

I couldn’t let my daughter leave without trying some of the goods from the café’s Halloween Tower, a seasonal afternoon tea style tower made up of themed pizza, sausage rolls, adorable little ghost meringues, cakes with pumpkin faces, scary gingerbread men and Angel Delight pots.

MY VERDICT:

I’ll definitely be returning to The Canopy. It’s so refreshing to see a place like this that is all about family and community, rather than making a profit. Everything they do is geared towards families from all walks of life and providing fun and memorable experiences for children, from the little touches like kids’ books and board games in the café to the Halloween-themed treats and activities. I know it’s been such a popular venue amongst residents from the East Marsh and beyond, and I can see why.

Even for those who don’t have children, The Canopy is just a really welcoming place with a lovely vibe to meet up with friends, attend a class or workshop or to work remotely with an affordable lunch. There’s something for everyone here, and it’s a place where anyone is welcome.
