Grimsby Community Energy will begin two significant solar installations next week as its latest share offer nears completion.
The organisation will bring renewable energy to Catch’s expansive Stallingborough roofspaces, as well as the YMCA building on Grimsby’s Orwell Street. Four buildings will be equipped at the industrial training centre, where grand plans to expand to become a national decarbonisation hub have been unveiled.
Work will being on Monday, with the results set to have a major impact on the energy costs and site carbon footprint. It is estimated that the site’s Technical Training Centre, The Scaffold building, Catch Skills and the main reception will generate 246 MWh of electricity a year – saving 55 tonnes of CO2 annually.

David Talbot, chief executive at Catch, said “We are delighted that work will start on the solar PV installations on our buildings. As we train the tradespeople of the future, it is only right to do this in facilities that are moving towards net zero.”
At YMCA Humber’s Orwell Street premises, installation will follow work at the new Freeman Street centre. Alongside that earlier addition, it is forecast to generate 88 MWh, saving 25 tonnes of CO2.

Grimsby Community Energy span out of work at Freeman Street Market, and is a community benefit society registered with the Financial Conduct Authority. It has just been shortlisted as the Community Energy Organisation of the Year in the small to medium category of the Community Energy Awards 2023. It takes place at The Lowry, Manchester, on Friday, November 17.
Vicky Dunn, managing director, said “I am amazed and overjoyed that we have been able to secure enough support to start the project. However, we are still looking for investment and the share offer will remain open until Tuesday, December 5.
