As a nation, there is arguably no more beloved dish than fish and chips but, with the price of a fish climbing, it is no longer the most affordable meal.
Well, that’s not necessarily the case if you live in Grimsby. Mathews Chippy, in Stanley Street, has been called the cheapest fish and chip shop in Britain with a portion of the delicious treat costing just £3. On top of that, you also get a pot of peas, beans, gravy or curry sauce.
Do not adjust your eyes, this is not a typo, all that for just £3. Obviously, there was only one thing left to do – put it to the test. In the name of consumer journalism once more, I drove down and got in the queue, guided by the smell of batter.

The chippy itself is quaint, but delightful. While it won’t win any awards for innovative design, it certainly gets my vote. The traditional décor really makes you feel at ease and the speed at which the staff prepared the fish and chips was something to behold.
Not wanting to leave my partner out, I ordered two specials with peas and gravy. Coming to a grand total of £6 for two meals, it worked out cheaper than if I’d cooked something at home.
Sent on my way with my two boxes of teatime delight, I took the obligatory selfie outside the chippy for the article. Walking off, I caught a snippet of a conversation which went along the lines of “Did you see that, he just took a selfie outside the chippy!”
Suitably embarrassed, I couldn’t wait until I got home to grab a chip or two. It has to be said, for £3 I really wasn’t expecting much, but I couldn’t have been more wrong.
They were beautifully crispy without being burnt, not greasy, with a golden colour and a fluffy inside. ‘Wow’ – that is the only word I have for these chips. Adding the gravy was like a direct bullet train to heaven, there was no beating it.
Impressed so far, it was time for the star of the show. Breaking off some fish in the car because I’m that greedy I couldn’t wait, I took a bite without expecting too much.
However, much like the chips, I was proven wrong. The fish tasted very fresh and the batter was wonderfully crisp. My only complaint would be the balance of batter to fish was maybe too heavy on the batter side, but overall there is no denying how brilliant it was.
For me, it’s the new go to chippy and I will definitely be travelling that little bit further to get it. If you haven’t tried it yet then I would recommend you make it your next takeaway tea. A brilliant meal at the cheapest price in Britain – what’s not to like?
