We all love a bargain and we all hate spending loads on the food shop, but imagine if there was a place where the two came together?
Well, imagine no longer, The Company Shop on Top Cat industrial estate near Great Coates is the perfect marriage of the two. Whether you’re looking to stock up your freezer or create an evening meal with some different ingredients, this place has everything.
Having just been reopened after a refurbishment, the store has new signs, layout, flooring and lighting. Apart from the prices, you wouldn’t know you weren’t in a major supermarket. For me, a monthly shop can cost between £100 and £200 for a family of five, or six if you include the dog, so I’m always looking for a bargain.

In here, they were everywhere. Setting myself a challenge, I wanted to see what I could get for around £10. With my basket at the ready, feeling like I was in an episode of Supermarket Sweep, I ventured in to find the best bargains in town.
Immediately, I picked up a three pack of Peroni Capri. In Sainsbury’s this is retailing at around £5, but here it was just £2. Less than £1 for a bottle of beer is simply unheard of these days, so in it went. Approaching the biscuit aisle, I had to make sure not to get carried away so I picked up a packet of Fox’s Viennese Fingers for 75p and a gingerbread man for 50p.
However, tempatation got the better of me as I grabbed a five pack of Pigs in Blankets flavoured crisps for 70p. To buy these in a well known supermarket would cost you about £1.65 so for better than half price, you can’t go wrong.
Along my travels, I also picked up some protein snacks for 50p each and a big pot of protein yoghurt for 60p, which was my personal favourite find. Wanting to keep everyone happy, I also opted for a tub of vanilla ice cream at just £1.50.
Energy drinks, bottles of water and yoghurts also fell into the basket as I went. Calling it a day, I decided to head to the tills to see what the damage was. After everything had been scanned through by the shop’s local celebrity Julie Wilson, I was pleasantly surprised with everything coming to £10.40.
However, the real question is how much I’d saved compared to me buying all this at a supermarket. Taking Sainsbury’s as a price reference, I looked at all the products I could compare and saved a whopping £8.80 across six products.
Looking at the bottled water, beer, crisps, biscuits, yoghurts and protein snacks, I’d spent just £5.95. However, in Sainsbury’s, the same products would have cost me £14.75. Suffice to say, it’s a shop that’s well worth going to if you get the chance.
