Grimsby’s best takeaways for a welcome break from turkey leftovers

Getting a bit sick of leftover turkey or cold pigs in blankets? Then it’s time to banish the post-Christmas blues with a lip-smackingly good takeaway.

Whether you’re a fan of a warming curry, a comforting pizza or traditional fish and chips, there will be a dish to suit every taste available. But when it comes to ordering, North East Lincolnshire has hundreds of outlets to choose from, so it can be difficult to separate the best from the rest.

Many takeaways come highly rated – including by Grimsby Live readers themselves – and it is always good to have a word-of-mouth steer on a place if you are planning to frequent it for the first time. For a real change from all the festive foods that have been gracing fridges and tables, you might want to look out one of the places below in the next few days, when yet another turkey sandwich might be your only other option.

Ernie Beckett’s, Cleethorpes

One of the most revered chippies in the whole of the Grimsby area is Ernie Beckett’s. The Market Street fish and chip shop cherishes the essence of traditional British fish and chips, while adding its own touch of culinary excellence.

Ernie Beckett’s says: “With a legacy spanning decades, we take pride in serving the finest, mouthwatering fish and chips in town. Our secret lies in using only the freshest, sustainably sourced fish and potatoes, cooked to perfection in our highest quality frying fat.”

One happy customer said: “All I can say is wow ! From ordering to delivery and eating them, five star. The best fish and chips I have ever had.”

Pizza Parlour

This top takeaway stole the crown in a reader poll. The Carr Lane venue faced some tough competition but came out a clear winner.

The venue offers a wide-ranging menu, including a huge variety of pizzas and different calzone options. Its owner Marcus Albadri credits his team for “working really hard to make customers happy”.

Just one of Pizza Palour’s regulars said: “Use this place at least once a week for delivery, the pizza, burgers and wraps are delicious, always piping hot on arrival.”

Goodburger @ The Bobbin

Everyone who visits this spot seems to have something good to say, whether it is about the portion size, the service and, obviously the quality and taste of the burgers. Grimsby Live readers voted Goodburger as the best challenger by a burger-stack-and-a-mile, in a recent opinion poll.

One customer praised the “5* burgers”; another said: “Think I have a new favourite burger.”

A recent review on TripAdvisor said: “Just chanced upon this place and very pleased we found it! The burgers were really good and it was 2-4-1 burgers and cocktails, so really good value.

Tredici

This restaurant and takeaway prides itself on being the area’s only traditional Italian pizzeria using a real hand-made Italian wood-fired pizza oven to create its tasty fare. One fan of the Abbey Gate venue said: “Pizza was amazing, really lovely and didn’t need to hang around long for it.”

A further happy customer said: “Some of the best pizza I’ve ever had! Really impressed with the vegan selection and the quality of the pizza.”

Wybers Chippy

Located in St Nicholas Drive, Wybers Chippy is renowned for its great service, friendly staff and reasonable prices. One reviewer said: “Absolutely brilliant fish from here. Big portions and some of the best tasting fish in town. Chips are very nice and not too greasy.”

There were more words of praise in this review, which said: “A fantastic chippy serving everything you would expect from haddock and cod to fishcake and Spam fritters as well as kebabs.”

The Chippy

Another high-ranking spot for some top-notch takeout is The Chippy, in Littlefield Lane. There was high praise indeed from this customer, who said: “I have eaten fish and chips across the nation in many coastal spots acclaimed for their fish and chips. I can say now that The Chippy is up there with the greatest of them.

“The fish was moist, fresh, and cooked to order. The chips actually tasted of fabulous potato, rather than relying on the fact of having been deep-fried to provide fabulousness. I loved the service most; what warmth.”

Blue Ocean

Located in Convamore Road, this fish and chip shop scored full marks with one recent customer, who said: “£4 for haddock and chips … when I walked in the door I thought I was getting a child’s portion, but I was very wrong, value for money is an understatement!

“Amazing service, fish is perfectly cooked, chips were spot on. I can’t recommend this shop enough.”

Millers Indian

Fans of Indian food make a beeline for this restaurant that also does takeaway, in Brigsley Road, Waltham. One recent experience was summed up like this: “Lovely food with friendly, helpful staff. Not overpriced. Will definitely visit again.”

Another customer said: “Whether for a takeaway or eating in the restaurant, the food and service is always exemplary. Last night we had a meal for ten delivered – could not fault this in any way, the food was absolutely delicious, we all loved it.”

The Frying Pan

“Always go to The Frying Pan when am in the area. The fish is gorgeous, chips are fluffy. Peas are tasty and all food is always piping hot.” So said one recent review of this spot in High Street, Waltham.

One customer said of a recent experience: “The fish and chips here are exceptional and fried to perfection; so is the chicken. All the staff are very pleasant and always look smart in their uniform. The service is excellent and inside the shop is spotless.”

Ocean Fish Bar

Located in St Peter’s Avenue, Cleethorpes, this venue has many followers among fish and chip fans. One said: “Ocean Fish Bar is a great place to go for a delicious and affordable meal. The fish and chips are always fresh and crispy, and the sausage and chips are also very good.”

Another happy customer said: “Nothing flashy but the service is exceptional and the food is delicious.”
