If you’re looking for a spot to enjoy some no-nonsense, tasty and reasonably priced Italian cuisine in the heart of Grimsby town centre, Da Vinci is the place to go.
Whether it’s for a quick bite to eat for lunch while doing some shopping, a weekday date night or a big occasion, I’ve always enjoyed the food at Da Vinci whenever I’ve visited over the years.
So on a child-free Monday evening and not fancying cooking or travelling very far, we headed down the road to Da Vinci for our tea.

One thing I really like about this place is just how much choice there is on the menu, from its impressive selection of pizza toppings and its iconic cheesy garlic breads to classic Italian pasta dishes and specialties, including a variety of steaks and chicken dishes.
After spending a good while browsing the menu, I opted for the Pollo Veneziana – described as ‘chicken breast cooked with ham, garlic, mushrooms and herbs in a cream and white wine sauce’ – while my partner chose the Pollo al Volcano, which was chicken breast cooked with spicy Italian sausages, roasted mixed peppers and fresh chilli in napolitana, basil and red wine sauce.
I’ve always really liked the atmosphere of Da Vinci. The quaintness and cosiness of the place makes it so easy to forget that you’re pretty much smack bang in the middle of the town centre, next to a bustling McDonalds restaurant.
The décor has remained largely unchanged during the few years I’ve visited, but I don’t think that’s a bad thing. It’s pleasant, without trying too hard, and a lot of the touches give it that authentic vibe you’d find in a lot of restaurants in Italy itself.
The food was served within 15 minutes or so, and we dug in. I thoroughly enjoyed my dish – the combination of chicken, ham and mushroom was lovely, and the sauce was perfectly creamy without being too rich.
My only criticism was that I wasn’t a massive fan of the veg that was served on the side (carrots, broccoli and new potatoes). I think a dish like this would work better with a more modern side dish like tenderstem broccoli or grilled asparagus, just as an example. But that’s probably just me being a bit picky.
I did have a little try of the Pollo al Volcano too, and was surprised at how much of a kick the sauce had. It was packed full of flavour and the chilli and tomato went together perfectly. I enjoyed it so much that I might go for this one myself next time!
My verdict:
Da Vinci has been in business for a number of years now and has remained popular among the people of Grimsby throughout that time, and it’s not difficult to see why. It’s a lovely, cosy restaurant with a huge selection of delicious and affordable Italian dishes, where you can escape the hustle and bustle of the town centre for an hour or two.
I’ve always enjoyed the food whenever I’ve visited Da Vinci, and I’m sure I’ll be saying the same in years to come.
