The Parishes car park in Scunthorpe to close for two weeks as new system is installed

A major Scunthorpe car park will be closed for two weeks as a new ‘pay by foot’ system is installed in a bid to ramp up security and tackle anti-social behaviour.

Works are scheduled to begin on Monday, July 29 at the Parishes multi-storey car park, involving the installation of vehicle access shutters and controlled access pedestrian doors. The goal is to increase security for everyone using the site.

Under the new system, visitors will be required to pay for their parking at a pay station prior to returning to their vehicle. Meanwhile, motorists who only need the complimentary two-hour parking won’t have to interact with a pay terminal – instead, they can simply approach the exit barrier, which will open automatically.

Additionally, blue badge holders can scan their badge’s barcode to continue enjoying free parking privileges. Cinema-goers are also catered for, with free parking available when they register their vehicle with the cinema upon arrival.

The installation of the new system will lead to the closure of the Parishes car park from Monday, July 29 until Friday, August 9.

During this period, ShopMobility will be relocated to St John’s Market on the ground floor, resulting in a temporary change in opening hours. More details can be found on the North Lincolnshire Council website.

Cllr John Davison, cabinet member for safer, stronger communities (urban) at North Lincolnshire Council, said: “It is important that we keep our public assets safe for everyone to use and unfortunately the Parishes multi-storey has been the target of criminal damage and incidents of anti-social behaviour.

“These incidents will not be tolerated, and tighter security is paramount to ensure the safety of everyone who lives, works or visits our area.

“This is one of our busiest car parks for Scunthorpe and the first stop for many of our visitors and we want to ensure it is a pleasurable and safe experience. This further investment and development will be welcome news for our residents and motorists.”

North Lincolnshire Council has introduced a new cashless parking system, featuring cutting-edge micro parking machines that utilise smart payment technology. The system also incorporates Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) to instantly identify vehicles as they enter.

Cllr Davison added: “The new technology is the latest addition to the council’s flagship two-hour free car parking policy which also sees all day free parking on Saturdays and Sundays in the thousands of parking spaces available in Scunthorpe.”

This initiative is a collaborative effort between North Lincolnshire Council and the Police and Crime Commissioner. It’s part of a security enhancement championed by the North Lincolnshire Community Safety Partnership (CSP), which includes key local stakeholders such as North Lincolnshire Council, Humberside Police, Humberside Fire and Rescue, Ongo, the National Probation Service, NHS Humber and North Yorkshire ICB, and the Humberside Police and Crime Commissioner.
