The Olympics are back – and there’s no forgetting when the magic of the Games came to northern Lincolnshire

The 2024 Olympic Games in Paris are now underway and seeing that last part of the torch relay along the River Seine in the French capital may well have stoked up memories of a similar sight in northern Lincolnshire 12 years ago.

There will be many who were there when the buzz of the Games was brought right to our doorstep during the torch relay ahead of London 2012.

Before it had been something we had just seen on our TVs, but back in June that year, the Olympic flame was given a grand tour of northern Lincolnshire, taking in Scunthorpe, Wrawby, Brigg, Immingham, Grimsby, Cleethorpes and Louth.

The torch made its way into our region on June 26 after starting the day in Sheffield. Following a trip through Scunthorpe, Wrawby, Brigg and Immingham, it ended its 39th day on the road passing through Grimsby and onto Cleethorpes where a cauldron was lit during a special event at Meridian Park.

The next morning saw the torch begin its journey to Lincoln with a 300-foot descent down Grimsby’s iconic Dock Tower, watched by dozens of docks workers and hundreds of members of the public.

It then snaked through the town centre, along Bargate and into Scartho, before being driven to Louth and resuming its route from there onto Mablethorpe and then Skegness.

At the time, Martyn Boyers, chief executive of Grimsby Fish Docks, said: “We’ve never seen anything like this before on the docks.

“It’s fascinating to see so many members of the public down here and for most of them it will be the closest they ever get to the fish markets.

“We’re used to early starts of the fish market so we were waiting ages for the 6am start!

”The fishermen enjoyed a celebratory Olympic breakfast of torched bacon and grilled sausages.”

Below are dozens of pictures from the torch’s time in northern Lincolnshire – if you were there you may even be pictured!
