Evri to create 9,000 jobs in hiring spree following US takeover

Parcel delivery giant Evri has announced its ambitious plans to bring on board 9,000 new employees alongside expectations of delivering a record number of parcels this year, following the company’s £2.7 billion acquisition by US investment firm Apollo.

Evri, which stands as the UK’s foremost parcel courier, unveiled its strategy to enhance its ranks by hiring an additional 8,000 couriers and bolstering its warehouse staff by 1,000 across various locations, with Scotland, Bury St Edmunds, Plymouth, and Gatwick earmarked for the expansion drive.

This surge in recruitment will increase the company’s self-employed courier workforce to an impressive 28,000, as it anticipates dealing with approximately 4 million parcels on its peak days.

Previously operating under the Hermes brand, Evri transitioned to new ownership last week when Apollo Global Management finalised a £2.7 billion acquisition from former private equity owners Advent International.

The move emerges amidst intensifying competition within the UK’s delivery sector where Royal Mail has historically held dominance. Evri and other competitors have been steadily gaining market share by catering predominantly to the burgeoning online shopping delivery segment, as reported by City AM.

Operating through five primary hubs, along with 27 depots and over 550 delivery units, Leeds based Evri is responsible for the distribution of around 730 million parcels annually. In the previous year, the company experienced stellar growth, handling more than 154 million parcels in the run-up to 30 December alone.

Martijn De Lange, CEO of Evri, commented on the development, asserting: “We know that service, reliability and quality are critical factors for our clients and consumers.”

Evri insisted that a surge in parcel deliveries, even compared with the heights of the pandemic, demonstrated a vote of confidence in its service.

The company said: “New client wins, and increased parcel volumes are proof of the trust customers have in our service and biggest-ever recruitment drive promises to deliver another record year.”
