We’ve all been there – you’ve had a super busy day and before you know it, it’s 9pm and you still haven’t had chance to get tea on, let alone decide what you’re having.
In those circumstances, we usually find ourselves shamelessly scrolling through the takeaway options on one of the apps – but on one such occasion, on a weeknight, we just didn’t fancy any of the typical takeaway orders.
I think anyone local would agree that Grimsby and Cleethorpes, as to be expected, doesn’t exactly have the same level of choice as the bigger towns and cities when it comes to takeaways, and seems to be inundated with pizza, kebab and chicken shops and Chinese takeaways. And, of course, fish and chip shops.

In the last few years, though, there have been lots of eclectic eateries popping up in the area that offer something a bit different, much to my delight. In fairness, there’s definitely more choice than there used to be.
On this particular Wednesday night, we didn’t fancy a “typical” takeaway of a kebab or a pizza platter and chips, so we decided to see what options were available on the Grimsby & Clee Eats app.
Before long, we stumbled across Smackdown Burger, which is based on Sea View Street. I’d had a browse of the menu before, and had always wanted to try one of their unique waffle burgers.
I ordered the Philly Cheese Waffle, which is described on the menu as classic beef patties with Monterey Jack cheese, onions and peppers. My partner ordered the Bacon & Cheese Burfle, which is described as classic beef patties with bacon and Monterey Jack cheese. I’m not sure why it was called a burfle, if I’m honest – obviously it’s supposed to be a cross between a burger and a waffle, but mine was served exactly the same, just with a different filling.
For sides, we went for the Halloumi Fries and the Mac n’ Cheese Balls, and for drinks, two Diet Cokes. There was an offer on for 20% off all orders over £15, and with delivery and service charge, the total came to just over £29.
I don’t know what happened with our order, but we were waiting a really long time. According to the app, it was due to come between 9.40pm and 10.20pm, but ended up arriving after 11pm. I did try texting and calling the restaurant, but didn’t get an answer. I’d reached the conclusion that the restaurant had either closed or our order hadn’t been picked up, but then there was a knock at the door.
In fairness, despite the long waiting time, the food arrived piping hot, and was absolutely delicious. It was probably one of the messiest things I’ve ever eaten – you’ll need a lot of napkins or kitchen roll for these – but it was the ultimate comfort food to indulge in after a busy and stressful day.
I’m not sure if the waffle was slightly on the undercooked side, but I did really enjoy the whole ‘waffle burger’ thing. I think it works. The rich and slightly sweet flavour of the waffle complemented the filling of the indulgent beef patties and the generous helping of cheese perfectly.
The waffle burgers were huge, too, so at £8.95 for mine and £7.95 for my partner’s, I didn’t think pricing was too bad – although the price of the sides were a bit steep for what they were.
Nevertheless, I’d definitely order a waffle burger from Smackdown Burger again. It was hearty, moreish, comforting and extremely messy – and worth the long wait!
