Boyes to turn former Pindar base in Scarborough into distribution centre

Value retailer Boyes has acquired the former Pindar printing company site in Scarborough in an undisclosed deal.

The department store chain, which started in the town more than 140 years ago, has taken over the 132,163 sq ft facility at Eastfield Industrial Estate which had been home to Pindar, was part of the YM Group which collapsed into administration in 2022. Plans are in place to turn the 5.58 acre plot on Thornburgh Road into a new distribution centre that will operate alongside Boyes’ existing warehouses on Havers Hill and Hopper Hill Road, serving the retailer’s network of 73 branches in Yorkshire and other regions.

A number of new jobs are expected to be created by the move, which follows recently published financials for Boyes showing turnover and profit growth. The expanding business said it had traded well through a challenging market, growing turnover to £101.7m, up from £93.8m, and achieving operating profits of £10.3m, up from £9.4m.

Boyes also said in the accounts, which cover the year to February 26, 2024, that it had been invested in two new shops at Sutton in Ashfield and in Blackpool, with plans to expand further where opportunities came up.

Andrew Boyes, chairman and joint managing director of the firm, said: “Investing in this new site will provide considerable additional storage space to augment Boyes’ two existing distribution centres in Scarborough. These sites were struggling for space, for the volume of stock being handled, so having a third warehouse facility will improve efficiency and provide the capacity to open more stores, as well as helping to ensure that all our shelves are stocked with the vast range of products that make us so popular with our customers.”

Leeds-based consultancy GV&Co marketed the property. Will Woodhall, a surveyor in the firm, said: “We generated a lot of interest in this site from both potential occupiers and investors, but it’s very satisfying to agree a sale to such a well-known and longstanding Scarborough based company. It’s also good news for the town as a whole, because ultimately this deal will create jobs and help to support local economic activity, as well as giving an empty building a new lease of life.”

Paul Jenkins from Cedarwood, which had previously asset managed the site on behalf of the landlord, said: “Following the demise of Pindar, which was sad news for Scarborough, it’s good news that the sale to Boyes has gone through as it will support the growth of a local employer.”
