Only a week after a well-known Scunthorpe charity shop was broken into, another charity based in the town has been ‘devastated’ by a burglary.
Jerry Green Dog Rescue said its Ravendale Street charity store was targeted in a ‘senseless’ act of theft and vandalism at the weekend. It is believed that overnight on Sunday, December 17, two suspects broke into the premises through a slatted wooden vent at the back of the shop.
The charity’s staff and volunteers arrived on Monday morning to open the shop, for what they describe as ‘the most vital trading week of the year’, and discovered the scene. Although they believe only donation boxes were stolen and the shop itself was secure, they estimated that repairs to the vent would be in the hundreds of pounds.

However, in a commendable show of community spirit, a local construction firm, that wishes to remain anonymous, has generously offered to undertake the necessary repairs free of charge. Jerry Green Dog Rescue is currently coordinating with the firm to facilitate the repair work as quickly as possible.
Humberside Police is working with the charity to find those responsible for the reported burglary. A spokesperson for the force said: “Investigations are ongoing after we were called to reports of a burglary at a shop on Ravendale Street North in Scunthorpe which is believed to have happened between 7.30pm and 9pm on Sunday, December 17.
“It is believed two people gained entry to the property, causing damage to a vent, and two charity tins containing approximately £30 of donations had been taken. We would appeal to anyone with information, CCTV or dashcam footage that may help us identify those responsible, to call us on our non-emergency number 101 quoting log 120 of 17 December.”
The community has shown huge concern for the incident, especially as it is the second charity shop burglary in a week. The Lindsey Lodge Hospice & Healthcare’s warehouse shop also fell victim to burglary on Monday, December 11.
After a string of what seems to be bad luck for Jerry Green Dog Rescue, Shelley Wilks, Interim CEO of Jerry Green Dog Rescue said: “The winter months are always the hardest for a charitable organisation like ours, particularly with the ever-increasing energy bills, so to fall victim to a senseless act of theft and vandalism particularly at this time of year is devastating for us. This also follows us having to cancel our Christmas Market, which was due to take place on December 3, following heavy snow and extreme weather conditions.
“This was expected to be one of our largest events of the year and was estimated to raise approximately £10,000. But regardless of these difficult times, we will continue to do what we do best and ensure as many dogs as we can help will have a good life and a safe, loving home.”
Despite the setback, Jerry Green Dog Rescue remains committed to its mission of caring for and rehoming dogs in need. The organisation is grateful for the ongoing support from the community and encourages anyone with information regarding the break-in to come forward and contact the local authorities.
