A planning application has been submitted for a “massage and wellbeing clinic” in Scunthorpe.
Permission has been sought for change of use of premises on Ashby High Street to the new activity. The massage parlour has already raised its profile via a number of posters throughout town in the autumn.
These posters described the establishment as a “Hands On Massage Parlour. Designed by women with men in mind.” An application document argues the massage parlour will “contribute to the vitality and viability of the local parade”.

Ashby massage parlour
The proposed massage parlour occupies two floors with ten treatment rooms, two including showers. In the autumn, residents spotted a number of posters with QR codes advertising the parlour. One man stated the stickers were “all over the High Street” with other residents wondering about the nature of the business.
On their website, Serenity Massage described the service as: “A new parlour based in Scunthorpe offering ultimate luxury and bespoke massage.”
It later states, “Our staff specialise to their own discretion; requirements must be discussed in the suite with the girl of your choice. We offer a professional and highly bespoke service, tailor-made and always in demand.

“Enjoy any one of our 5 star luxury suites, it’s sure to be an experience to remember.” In a short disclaimer, it says: “Please note that this is not an escort site and must only be used by persons over the age of 18 and not offended by content of an adult nature before entering.”
“It is considered that there would be no substantial harm arising from the current proposal, which would outweigh the benefits which it would deliver,” a planning document contends.
Haxey bungalow
A vacant coffee shop is proposed to be converted into a one bed bungalow. The village of Haxey may have been distracted this last week with all things Haxey Hood-related, but it too has a High Street planning application.
A coffee shop ran at the premises for over a decade until summer 2023. Before that, it was thought to have been a butcher’s shop in 2006. The conversion into residential is viewed as “more efficient use”.
As for the loss of shop amenity, it is contended, “the loss of E class floorspace proposed is minimal at best, and does not represent the loss of an irreplaceable community facility”. Coffee mornings at the nearby Haxey Memorial Hall and dining and social facilities at the Loco restaurant and Duke William pub in Church Street are noted.
Bottesford tanning salon
Over in Bottesford, planning permission has been granted for a tanning salon. It will employ four staff, one full-time. The 85 sq m building in Holme Hall Avenue was a mini-convenience store until 2015.
Its most recent use is as storage. The council’s environmental protection team said the change of use had “the potential to cause a noise disturbance at the nearby residential properties”. It recommended two conditions, one on opening hours and the other specifying appointments only.
The latter is not in the decision notice. But its opening hours will be limited to 8am to 9pm, Monday to Sunday.
