Artell pleased with Grimsby Town’s ‘character and application’ at Newport

David Artell was impressed with his Grimsby Town side’s “character and application” in their 1-1 away draw with Newport County, which prolonged the Mariners’ unbeaten run.

Town have not lost in their last six league outings now after earning a hard-fought point at Rodney Parade, coming back late on after going a goal behind in the second half. Grimsby are still yet to win on the road this season, but Artell saw more encouraging signs in certain aspects of the team’s play.

Skipper Danny Rose continued his good scoring form with the equaliser, and while the clean sheet was not possible, Town looked more solid defensively than they have done on previous away trips this term.

Grimsby were not at their best with the ball but showed some fight off it to stay in the game until the closing stages when they were able to bounce back and finish strongly with a couple of good chances that could have earned them that first away victory.

While Artell was not positively blown away by his players on this occasion, he was pleased with how they dealt with Newport’s periods of control in the game and once again viewed the afternoon as a whole as more progress for the team.

“We showed really good character and resilience and we’re six unbeaten [in the league] now and there’s a little bit of momentum,” said the Mariners boss.

“I think a draw was a fair result, both teams could’ve won it but also lost it. I thought the performance we put in off the ball was good in large parts – we have played better with the ball but it’s not always easy.

“I can’t say ‘pleased’ because we didn’t win, but I’d say ‘satisfied’ with what we’ve shown in patches. We could quite easily have lost it, but we probably should have won. The best chance of the game was for Gav [Holohan] right at the end but, having said that, he was terrific when he came on.

“I thought the character and the application of the team was terrific – they had a right good go and they didn’t wilt under the pressure, while still trying to play football in patches. There were plenty of positives and enough chances to win the game, we’ve just got to do the good things more often.”
