New investment into Hull brewery Atom Beers has promised to secure the future of the business, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year.

City businessman Rob Brocklesby, the founder of North Cave-based food waste to energy firm Brocklesby and now owner of animal feed specialist Adams & Green, has acquired the craft producer following a pre-pack administration. The undisclosed deal is said to safeguard the future of the Atom Beers brands and the continuity of brewing at its Sutton Fields Industrial Estate premises.

Five jobs have been retained in the move which founder Allan Price said would provide the necessary capital to drive the award-winning business forward and put it in the best position to grow. Atom Beers was launched in 2014 by Mr Price and Sarah Thackray, both scientists, who said the brand was launched out of a love of science and inspired by a life of travel. It has gone on to produce a range of beers including IPA, stout, larger and sour.

The brewery’s first tap room opened in 2018 in the Corn Exchange within Hull’s old town, and later relocated to the old Yorkshire bank building in the city’s Avenues area. That venue, operated under a separate business, remains unaffected by the recent changes and continues to be owned by its original shareholders.

A second tap room was launched in nearby Beverley in 2020 but was closed earlier this year. At the time, customers described it as a loss to the town.

Rob Brocklesby said: “In a very challenging market, Atom has always strived to make the best beers possible and has significant recognition across the industry and is a recognised Hull Brand. The beers are excellent and with this investment there is a bright future ahead.”

Last year Atom’s Quantum State session IPA topped a list of leading food and drink producers in East Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire. The Humber region’s Great Taste Awards 2023, renowned for its rigorous judging process, gave the beer a two star rating.

Referee David Coote has been sacked following the emergence of a video where he made derogatory remarks about Liverpool and their former manager Jurgen Klopp. Referee David Coote has been sacked following the emergence of a video where he made derogatory remarks about Liverpool and their former manager Jurgen Klopp. Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) confirmed the termination of the 42-year-old Nottinghamshire official’s employment in a statement on Monday afternoon, saying that a thorough investigation had concluded he was “in serious breach of the provisions of his employment contract, with his position deemed untenable”. “Supporting David Coote continues to be important to us and we remain committed to his welfare,” PGMOL’s statement added. “David Coote has a right to appeal the decision to terminate his employment.” The video which triggered PGMOL’s investigation into Coote’s conduct first came to public attention on November 11. In it, Coote is asked for his views on a Liverpool match where he has just been fourth official, and describes them as “s***”. He then describes Klopp as a “c***”, and, asked why he felt that way, Coote says the German had “a right pop at me when I reffed them against Burnley in lockdown” and had accused him of lying. “I have got no interest in speaking to someone who’s f****** arrogant, so I do my best not to speak to him,” Coote said. Later in the video, Coote again refers to Klopp, this time as a “German c***”. The Football Association opened its own investigation into that video, understood to be centred on that last comment and whether Coote’s reference to Klopp’s nationality constituted an aggravated breach of its misconduct rules. That investigation remains ongoing. The investigation by PGMOL which led to Coote’s contract being terminated is also understood to have looked at another video which appeared to show Coote snorting a white powder, purportedly during Euro 2024 where he was one of the assistant VARs for the tournament. European football’s governing body UEFA also appointed an ethics investigator to look into the matter. The FA is also separately investigating an allegation – strenuously denied by Coote – that he discussed the prospect of giving a Leeds player a yellow card with a fan prior to a match in an online conversation. The Sun alleges after Coote booked the player, he messaged the individual back to say: “I hope you backed as discussed.” The FA said it was investigating the allegation as “a matter of urgency”. Coote said: “I strongly refute these false and defamatory allegations. Whatever issues I may have had in my personal life, they have never affected my decision-making on the field. I have always held the integrity of the game in the highest regard, refereeing matches impartially and to the best of my ability.” PGMOL’s investigation did not look at the allegation related to the Leeds yellow card. NHS ordered to focus on patient safety as hospitals deal with record demand

NHS leaders have been ordered to “prioritise patient safety” ahead of a key A&E target as hospital beds in England near full capacity. Hospital bosses have been told to focus on patients with the greatest need above trying to meet key targets in emergency departments. Government officials said there was a “critical” situation in emergency care as health leaders came together to discuss how to cope with the surge of demand over winter. There is a national target for 95% of people who go to A&E to be admitted, transferred or sent home within four hours. But concerns have been raised that the target can lead to medics seeing patients who they can get through quickly as a priority. Health Secretary Wes Streeting has told NHS leaders to “put patients ahead of targets”. It comes as a record number of people are occupying hospital beds for this time of year because of a variety of illnesses and injuries, with England’s NHS hospital beds around 95% full. “Skyrocketing” cases of flu, coupled with rising levels of norovirus and other winter bugs are already heaping additional strain on the NHS, health leaders have said. Mr Streeting said the NHS should improve emergency ambulance response times, address handover delays and tackle the longest waits in emergency departments. “We inherited a broken NHS that saw annual winter crisis as the norm,” he said. “This year, we’re seeing record pressures on services as we move into December. “This winter, I want to see patient safety prioritised as we brace ourselves for the coming months. “I’m asking trusts to focus on ambulance delays, handovers and the longest A&E waits.” Amanda Pritchard, NHS England chief executive, said the service was “already seeing unprecedented demand going into winter”. She added: “While staff have worked hard to prepare – including expanding virtual wards so more patients can receive hospital-style care at home and delivering over 27 million vaccinations since September – we know services are set to come under even more strain.” Matthew Taylor, chief executive of the NHS Confederation, said: “Prioritising patient safety across the urgent and emergency care pathway is likely to result in elective operations being delayed or cancelled, so waiting lists could rise as a result.” It comes a week after the Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer pledged that by July 2029, 92% of patients would be seen within 18 weeks for pre-planned care such as hip and knee replacements. Meanwhile, the number of people with flu needing hospital treatment continues to rise, with health leaders urging those eligible for a free flu jab to get vaccinated “now or never”. Professor Sir Stephen Powis, national medical director for NHS England, said: “Flu cases are skyrocketing so it’s now or never for older people and children to get themselves jabbed and protected ahead of any family get-togethers they have planned over the festive period. “Every Christmas we see far too many older adults and children admitted to hospital because of flu, and the best way to avoid this situation is getting your flu jab if you are eligible.” Saffron Cordery, interim chief executive at NHS Providers, told BBC Breakfast: “We’ve seen a real rise in, a spike in, the number of children who are suffering from flu in particular, and often that’s a predictor of a later wave coming in adults. “So it’s likely that we might see rising demand in adults further down the line. “So yes, we are bracing ourselves, I think, for a challenging winter ahead.” Published: 09/12/2024 by Radio NewsHub
