Bottesford residents’ concerns amid ‘significant increase’ in overnight attempted burglaries and thefts

Residents in Bottesford have spoken of their fear and concern following a “significant increase” in attempted burglaries and car thefts in the area.

Officers from Humberside Police were called to High Leys Road at around 6.30am on Tuesday morning, following reports that two vehicles and a number of other items had been stolen from a property overnight. An 18-year-old man was subsequently identified and arrested on suspicion of burglary.

Police also received reports of two men trying door handles nearby on Saxon Court, and began making enquiries to establish if the two reports are connected.

One resident, who lives on High Leys Road, captured footage on his Ring doorbell – which Scunthorpe Live has seen – showing two men in his drive looking towards his property, at around 1.30am on Tuesday.

The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, told Scunthorpe Live: “I had two men in my drive checking it out. On the same night, one of my neighbours’ houses was broken into and they had two vehicles stolen.

Many residents captured footage on CCTV cameras and Ring doorbells overnight on Tuesday

“We have lived in the area for eight years and in the last year we’ve seen a significant increase in attempted burglaries and car thefts in the area.

“As a precaution we’ve started always garaging our cars and we’ve invested in Ring cameras and doorbells, a CCTV system, and we’ve installed security lights and fitted an alarm system. As we’re approaching retirement we need the sense of security in our own home.

“The neighbourhood is very nice and neighbours keep each other informed of any problems of unwanted visitors over night. The police have been very proactive in the area and the incidents had stopped for a good few months, but as police resources are now not focusing on our area, the incidents have suddenly risen in the last few weeks.

“Unfortunately the police only have so many officers to cover large areas and they can’t be everywhere at night, but now that the incidents have risen again in the area I’m sure patrols will increase.”

The man said that some incidents are not reported to police by residents – but he feels that if they were, the severity of the problem would be highlighted.

“If the charts show a spike in burglary and car thefts or even people trying door handles overnight, it helps get the resources where they are needed quicker,” he said.

“On the whole we feel the police do the best they can with the available resources they have, but in an ideal world we would have more police on our streets all the time to ensure everyone is safer at night.”

Another resident said: “Seeing all the Ring Doorbell videos popping up on Facebook showing these men attempting to break into houses and cars, has me on edge.

“The fact some have managed to steal cars makes me very worried. I feel like we are going to have another spate of robberies and I keep checking all of our doors and windows.”

Many other residents in Bottesford have taken to social media this week to share footage captured on their security cameras and Ring doorbells of men “trying handles” on cars and doors overnight.
