Man jailed after pulling out gun during car parking dispute

A man has been sentenced to five years in prison as well as a ten year restraining order after scaring members of the public when he produced a gun after a dispute over a car parked in a drive way. Trevor Cheesman, 62-years-old, of South View Avenue, Burringham was charged with possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, possession of firearm and possession of ammunition without a certificate and possession of a firearm by person prohibited. He pleaded guilty to all offences at Grimsby Crown Court yesterday (Wednesday, August 14). Read more: The court heard how, back on February 19, Cheesman became angered after someone had parked on a driveway which he claimed belonged to him. This resulted in him holding up a wheel clamp and telling the person to move. Later in the day, Cheesman was approached by members of the public who attempted to de-escalate the earlier situation. However, Cheesman assaulted one person and then took out a gun he was holding behind his back. Officers were called to the address and he was arrested on suspicion of affray. A search was conducted of his property and police recovered a loaded gun and ammunition – for which he did not have a licence. Detective Constable Stephen Storey said: “The actions of Cheesman that day were reckless and could have led to devastating consequences for innocent members of the public. “I am pleased he acknowledged his actions that day, admitting what he did and can no longer cause fear to members of the community. “If you know someone who carries a weapon, please do tell us as this information gives us the authority we need to stop and search people suspected of carrying weapons, as well as prosecute those who are.” Join the FREE Grimsby Live WhatsApp Community Get all the latest stories, sent straight to your WhatsApp – all you need to do is click the link. ‘Leave my boy alone’ – mum heartbroken as grave for son who took own life vandalised

A young man who took his life in January has had his “forever bed” at his grave in Woodlands Crematorium vandalised, putting his family through even more agony. Ryan Barrett, from Scunthorpe, died on January 17 aged 21 following mental health problems. His mum Stacey Barrett has been raising awareness for mental health and begged men to “speak up” rather than struggle alone. Tragically, Stacey said constant vandalism of keepsakes left in memory of Ryan has left her “heartbroken”. She said it has happened three times with the most recent incident occuring last week. READ MORE: Ryan was buried at Woodlands Crematorium in the town on February 16 this year. His mum Stacey told Scunthorpe Live: “I have made it look as nice as I can for him and on all three occasions it’s been damaged. “Photo frames have been smashed up. Lights have been bent in half and broken. Flowers have been damaged. Slates his mates have put down have been damaged and hidden in bushes around where he is buried.” Damaged items at Ryan Barrett’s graveside in Woodlands Crematorium include photo frames and flowers (Image: Supplied) She added: “Ryan maybe wasn’t a favourite person to some people and he will openly admit he had some enemies, that’s fine. But he doesn’t deserve this. The last three months of his life he went through hell. “Now just leave him to rest in peace. Leave his grave, leave his forever bed alone. That’s all I want but people aren’t listening. I just want him to be left alone. Stacey Barrett said the family have to keep taking things off Ryan’s forever bed at the crematorium because of damage (Image: Supplied) “I can’t grieve because every time I go up, I see more damage. I haven’t been able to grieve my son properly and he’s been gone for six months. That’s not how it should be.” Talking about how the vandalism of Ryan’s graveside affects her family, Stacey said: “It’s not fair. We make it as nice as we can for him so we can go and sit with him and we’ve had to remove everything off there again. Every time we put something new down it gets destroyed so we’ve had to take everything off. “I shouldn’t have to do that: just leave my boy alone. Every time I go up it is heartbreaking. I sit there, next to his cross, and I’m in bits because I just want him to be left in peace now. That’s all I want.” Stacey said she was aware Woodlands Crematorium has a policy that states memorial items are left at people’s own risk. Scunthorpe Live has approached North Lincolnshire Council, who run the crematorium, for comment. Original artice: https://www.grimsbytelegraph.co.uk/all-about/scunthorpe

Changes at Scunthorpe car dealership as it transforms to state-of-the-art Ford centre – and creates 30 new jobs

Stoneacre at Scunthorpe, the original flagship site that has been serving the town since the company was formed in 1995, is undergoing a major refurbishment programme. This project will transform the Winterton Road site into a state-of-the-art Ford centre, offering customers an improved car-buying experience. Under the ownership of local entrepreneur Richard Teatum, Stoneacre has expanded to 102 franchise locations and employs 3,000 staff, a success story that started right here in Scunthorpe. During the renovation process, Stoneacre has pledged to continue to serve its valued customers without interruption. Temporary facilities will be in place to ensure minimal inconvenience and maintain normal business operations. READ MORE: As a token of appreciation for customers’ patience and loyalty, the dealership is offering a £500 discount voucher on any vehicle purchased at the Scunthorpe site. Shaun Foweather, managing director, said: “We thank Scunthorpe for their continued support and we hope the town is as excited as we are to see the investment made into the area. “The new facilities will ensure that the buying experience we offer is unrivalled anywhere.” The transformation of the site into a Ford centre will generate around 30 new jobs by partnering with ten local contractors. Stoneacre has said this dedication to collaborating with local businesses further solidifies the company’s role as a major employer in the region. Stoneacre is the UK’s largest independent automotive retailer, representing over 30 leading car manufacturers. With a network of over 100 dealerships nationwide, Stoneacre employs over 3,000 people and is committed to delivering exceptional customer service. The Stoneacre network has grown steadily over nearly 30 years, with the company gradually expanding into new areas. A core element of this expansion has been due to strategic acquisitions over the years, with several such investments central to the growth of Stoneacre. Time has also brought an expanded list of manufacturers who are represented across its dealerships. Stoneacre has come a long way since Richard Teatum first took over that first used car dealership that had fallen on hard times. Now offering a huge selection of the world’s top car, van and bike brands, Stoneacre has a sprawling network covering the north of England, as well as parts of the Midlands, Cambridgeshire and North Wales. In addition is the Stoneacre Academy, a unique outfit for a car dealer, which is an Ofsted-regulated school. Intended as a means to provide aspiring members of the automotive industry with skills for a lifelong career, the Stoneacre Academy earned a grade of “Outstanding” for its maiden inspection. So far, hundreds of apprentices have been enrolled by the Stoneacre Academy in a variety of roles across the Stoneacre network. Not only that, 96 per cent of apprentices now have full-time roles with the company, with some of those moving into senior positions over time. New shop planned for North Lincolnshire village that hasn’t had one for years

A village without a shop or pub is on the verge of getting a store again. New Holland, a village of approximately a thousand people, had its pub the Magna Charta close in November. The previous village shop in Sheffield Villas in Barrow Road, closed some years ago. A licensing application was made in late June to North Lincolnshire Council for a village shop at the Sheffield Villas address. A public notice for the licensing application was issued on July 1. Work has already been done to the premises in readiness. Read More: Jayesh Goraniya is the applicant. He said the shop will open “hopefully at the end of the month”. Its opening hours would be 6am to 8pm, Monday to Friday, and slightly reduced hours at the weekend. The licensing application covers 6am to 11pm, all days of the week, to allow for future flexibility. “I was just wanting to start a business somewhere,” Jayesh said, and he had originally found a possible unit in Laceby. But it was viewed as too expensive to develop. Laceby had a Co-Op open earlier this summer. While in Laceby, he was advised by a woman that New Holland may be suitable as it lacked a shop and Post Office. He and his uncle visited the village and on the fourth or fifth visit, he was able to get contact details for the owners of the last village shop premises. Jayesh said the previous owner responded warmly to the interest expressed: “That’s great, I’m ready to sell the premises, she said.” They had wanted it to be taken up again as a shop. Sheffield Villas in Barrow Road, New Holland, could host the village shop again (Image: Donna Clifford/GrimsbyLive) “I found there’s no shop in the village, so I thought maybe this is a good location for a family friendly business. I thought it’s really good for the village to have the shop.” It would be a shop initially, but Jayesh said he had been in contact with the Post Office about having a smaller branch within it in future. The village shop will have the usual items expected in a corner shop, including refrigerated food, fruit and veg, milk, newspapers, and some alcohol. Lottery numbers would also be added, though he expected that to be within the first two months of opening, as he waited to hear back from National Lottery. It is not the first time he has run a village shop, having run another for a year-and-a-half in East Lindsey in the past four years. “Quite a good time I had over there,” he said of the experience. New ‘Affected By Crime’ support service launched for victims in the Humber region

A new service has been launched in the Humber region to assist people who have been impacted by crime. The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC) and Victim Support have unveiled Affected By Crime (ABC), which aims to help people cope and recover after experiencing crime. The service is available to all victims of crime and their families, regardless of whether or not they have reported the incident to the police. READ MORE: For those who choose to report, navigating the criminal justice system can be complex and challenging. This new service aims to support victims through this process as a case progresses through the police, courts and other criminal justice agencies. The Victims and Prisoners Act 2024 has enshrined the rights of victims into law, and the ABC service will keep victims informed of these rights and ensure they are upheld. Victim Support, an independent charity with five decades of experience supporting people affected by crime in the Humber region and across the country, provides the service. The charity’s established history in the area means the specialist team possesses local knowledge and expertise. The ABC service can assist people in navigating the criminal justice system and liaising with other criminal justice agencies, offer support in coping with the experience of being a victim of crime, discuss safety, provide access to useful websites and online tools, and answer questions or provide direction to someone who can. Support can be accessed via telephone (0800 368 7586) or live chat, available on the service’s website www.affectedbycrime.com. This new initiative represents a significant investment by the OPCC to enhance support for individuals affected by crime in the region. The OPCC also commissions specialist services to assist victims of domestic abuse and sexual offences, as well as a restorative justice service. Police and Crime Commissioner Jonathan Evison said: “I have listened to victims of crime and commissioned this new service in response to what they told me are their needs and expectations after being affected by crime. Accessibility, inclusion and equality are at the heart of the new service which strengthens the local support for people affected by crime. This service is the first of its kind in our area and I am looking forward to seeing it develop.” Debbie Harding, area manager at Victim Support, said: “We are thrilled to be delivering this much-needed support for victims of crime in the Humber region. Our specialist service will see caseworkers who understand the local area tailoring support to people’s individual needs. “We know that experiencing crime and navigating the criminal justice system if you choose to report can be overwhelming and often traumatic, so for many this support is a lifeline. We look forward to working with the Police and Crime Commissioner to deliver the best possible support to victims.” Original artice: https://www.grimsbytelegraph.co.uk/all-about/scunthorpe

The best A-Level schools and colleges in Grimsby and Scunthorpe last year

Waltham Toll Bar Academy, The Vale Academy in Brigg, and John Leggott Sixth Form College in Scunthorpe, were among the higher performing Humberside schools and colleges for A-Level results last year. On Thursday, hundreds of thousands of students across the country will nervously tear open envelopes to discover their A-Level fates. Likewise, those taking BTEC qualifications. For schools and colleges, it is an exciting time too, to see both how individual pupils have fared and their overall grade performances. Last academic year, Waltham Toll Bar, The Vale Academy and John Leggott Sixth Form College had strong A-Level cohorts, according to gov.uk school performance data. Read More: Waltham Toll Bar fared best of the Grimsby-side schools with recorded data. The average A-Level pupil’s grade there was C+, and 11 per cent achieved AAB or higher. John Leggott Sixth Form College in Scunthorpe had an average A-Level grade of C in 2022/23. Nine per cent of its pupils got the AAB or higher grades combination. The Vale Academy in Brigg achieved strong A-Level results too. Also a C grade average, but with 17 per cent of A-Levels pupils picking up AAB or higher. You can search for other providers via the link below. Speaking ahead of the upcoming results days, North East Lincolnshire Council’s portfolio holder for children and education, Cllr Margaret Cracknell, wished all pupils the best. “I can’t wait to read about the results that our students have achieved after their hard work,” she said. “It’s always an emotional day for our students. There is a lot of anxiety as students open those envelopes to find out if they got the grades that they hoped for. “It’s important that our young people know that there is a lot of advice and support available to help them decide what to do once they’ve got their results, and to support them with their mental health. “I’d also encourage parents to talk to their children about their plans for the future, about the results that they are expecting, and about where they can access support if they need it. “Finally, from all of us at North East Lincolnshire Council, I want to wish all those receiving their results this week the very best of luck.” Contact details for the likes of the National Careers Service (NCS), Young People’s Support Services (YPSS) and Compass Go, can be found here. As has become tradition, TV presenter Jeremy Clarkson tweets out a message every year on A-Level results day, reflecting on his achievements despite modest A-Level results. Last year, he posted: “It’s not the end of the world if your A level results aren’t what you’d hoped for. I got a C and 2 Us and here I am today with my own brewery.” Original artice: https://www.grimsbytelegraph.co.uk/all-about/scunthorpe
