Centenary celebrations as Ashby church marks 100 years

One hundred years of history will be marked by St Paul’s Church, Ashby, this coming weekend.

The church’s centenary will be celebrated with an extended weekend of activities involving the local community. From Friday to Monday, June 21 to 24, St Paul’s will be at the centre of concerts, exhibitions, a fun day, and special church services.

Members of the local community, schools and musicians are all expected to take part in marking one hundred years since the foundation stone was first laid at St Paul’s. John Boddy, vice-chairman of the Parochial Church Council, said: “One of the highlights will be a stunning flower festival, provided by the Scunthorpe Flower Club.

“There will a concert on Friday evening with the Frederick Gough Jazz Band and pop music from the 50s to 70s from our local group Affinity, including a wine and cheese buffet. During the day on Saturday, we are holding a fun day in the church grounds, with stalls, games, bouncy castle and ‘Alpacas and Friends’.

“There will also be a varied programme of music in the church.” John added: “There will also be an exhibition of wedding photos – we put out a request on Facebook for people to send in their own, or those of family members, photos from weddings at St Paul’s over the past 100 years, and we’ve had a fantastic response, with photos going back to the 1930s.

John said: “We are aiming to make this a really fantastic event. We hope it is one which the Ashby community will support, enjoy and remember for a long time.”
