Cleethorpes Armed Forces Day weekend 2024 schedule from the carnival to the Red Arrows

The schedule for this month’s spectacular Armed Forces weekend in Cleethorpes has been revealed from the Community Carnival to the incredible Red Arrows.

North East Lincolnshire’s Armed Forces Day celebrations will be held between Friday, June 28 and Saturday, June 30, featuring a packed line-up of events to show support to the men and women of our Armed Forces community and our veterans. Billed as the “largest free event on the east coast” with events taking place from Sea Road to the Boating Lake, things will get underway on the Friday night with the return of the Community Carnival. This will see dozens of floats head along the High Street and Alexandra Road along with hundreds of participants.

There will then be displays and activities at the Boating Lake Paddock throughout Saturday and Sunday to mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings. Meanwhile, a number of local dance groups and bands will be performing on the stage near to the Armed Forces Memorial Gate, in Alexandra Road, over the weekend. These include groups from Clifton Dance Academy, as well as the All For One choir.

Saturday will see the main Armed Forces Day parade with military bands, members of the Armed Forces, veterans and cadets, setting off from Grant Street at 1.45pm. There will also be an evening sunset ceremony on the Saturday evening including cadets and the Sea Cadet Band, a march of the standards and veterans before the Union Flag is lowered at the Remembrance Gate.

Of course, it wouldn’t be Armed Forces weekend without some amazing aerial displays and this year will be no different. On the Saturday, the Red Arrows will be performing over the resort as part of the display team’s 60th anniversary season. They will follow displays from the RAF Typhoon, RAF Tutor, the aerobatic Jubilee Pitts team and, the new edition to this year’s events, the SIAI-Marchetti SF260.

All of these, except for the Red Arrows, will perform again on the Sunday.

The Saturday will climax with a brilliant fireworks display which will be held near Ross Castle to mark to end of a fun-packed day. The weekend is also being supported by traders from around Lincolnshire and beyond, with the Big Wheel returning to the leisure centre car park for the weekend.

Alex Baxter, managing director of the Armed Forces Major Events Team, said: “This is the biggest free event on the east coast held to thank our Armed Forces personnel, past and present, for their service to our country and their support to civilian life. We are a small group of volunteers who organise the weekend, and it takes almost a year of planning, but it’s always a fabulous weekend in the resort.”

Police officer who shot Chris Kaba tells court his actions were lawful

The police officer who shot Chris Kaba dead says he understands the “distress” caused to his family but that his actions were “lawful, proportionate and necessary” as he was trying to save the lives of his colleagues, a jury has heard. The comments by marksman Martyn Blake are in statements he made as the Metropolitan Police and the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) began investigating the September 5 2022 shooting. Blake, 40, denies murdering Mr Kaba when he shot the 24-year-old in the head through the windscreen of an Audi car during a police stop in Streatham, south London. Blake described his actions as “lawful and appropriate in the circumstances” as he feared that “one or many” of his colleagues could have been killed, the Old Bailey heard. In the statement, he said: “Although I have tried to pay little attention to media reports of this (event), I am well aware of the enormous distress that the death of Mr Kaba has caused to his family. “I am truly sorry that this is the case. “It is absolutely right that they should grieve and want an explanation and want answers.” Moments before the shooting, Mr Kaba had tried to get away by driving forward and then reversing into a police car which had blocked him in, jurors have heard. Police had been looking for the Audi after its registration was linked to reports of gunshots in Brixton, south London, the night before. Blake said Mr Kaba had appeared to be aware he was being followed by police and looked like he was trying to escape through a gap between the cars that had blocked him in. Blake said: “There was a lot of noise and shouting of armed police. “There was a large screeching of an engine revving. I can remember feeling quite frightened and filled with dread at that stage as I could not sense what would happen next.” In his statement, Blake said “it was my unequivocal belief that the driver was using his car as a weapon” and “he was oblivious to the danger he was causing”. Blake said officers were shouting “police” and telling the driver to stop. The marksman said he had “a very clear impression” of at least three or four officers being around the vehicle in “very close proximity” to it as it moved back in what he believed was a fourth attempt to try to escape. Blake said he took a position with his firearm and pointed his green laser dot in the direction of the driver in the hope that he would stop, but it did not work and he could hear the engine revving. Blake said he was conscious that his colleagues were getting closer and closer to the driver’s window. As the officers were level with the door, the driver responded in a sudden and quick movement and still had both hands on the wheel. Blake said he heard “a sudden roar of the engine” and believed if the car reversed, the officers were in “imminent danger” of death. He said: “If the car managed to travel even a short distance, the officers would have been taken up underneath the front or rear wheels.” None of his colleagues were wearing helmets and Blake said his assumption was that they were in danger as they could be killed if the car moved forward and “nothing suggested that he (the driver) was listening to the officers – it was the exact opposite”. Blake said he felt that “in that split second that the only thing appropriate to do” was to incapacitate the driver. In his statement, he said: “I believe the discharge of my firearm in those circumstances was lawful, proportionate and necessary. “I fired to save the lives of my colleagues. “It was my genuine belief that if I had not incapacitated the driver, the vehicle would have continued to move forward with one or more of my colleagues going under and being killed.” He said he believed he had “no other legal option available” in that split second and if he had not done anything, the driver could have moved off and “I would have been watching one or of my colleagues die”. Israeli strike on a school turned shelter in Gaza kills at least 27 people

An Israeli strike on a school sheltering displaced people in the Gaza Strip has killed at least 27 people, Palestinian medical officials said. Those killed in the central Gaza city of Deir al-Balah included a child and seven women, according to the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, where the bodies were taken. It said several other people were wounded. The Israeli military said it carried out a precise strike targeting a militant command and control centre inside the school, without providing evidence. But witnesses said the strike occurred while school managers were meeting representatives of an aid group in a room normally used by Hamas-run police who provide security. They said there were no police in the room at the time. The Palestinian branch of Terre des Hommes, a Swiss aid group, said members of one of its children’s health teams were killed in the strike, though it did not specify how many. “There were no militants. There was no Hamas,” said Iftikhar Hamouda, who had fled from northern Gaza earlier in the war. “We headed to tents. They bombed the tents. In the streets, they bombed us. In the markets, they bombed us. In the schools, they bombed us. Where should we go?” The Hamas-run government operated a civilian police force numbering in the tens of thousands, but they largely vanished from the streets after the start of the war as Israel targeted them with air strikes. Plainclothes Hamas security personnel still exert control over most areas. The militant group has continued to launch attacks on Israeli forces and fire occasional rockets into Israel more than a year after the Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7 2023 which ignited the war. The militants stormed into Israel in that attack, killing 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducting around 250 others. They are still holding around 100 captives, a third of whom are believed to be dead. Israel’s offensive has killed more than 42,000 Palestinians, according to local health authorities, who do not say how many were fighters but say women and children make up more than half of the fatalities. The war has destroyed large areas of Gaza and displaced around 90% of its population of 2.3 million people, often multiple times. In a separate development, the UN peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon said an Israeli tank fired on its headquarters in the town of Naqoura, hitting an observation tower and wounding two peacekeepers. The attack drew widespread condemnation and prompted the Italian Defence Ministry to summon Israel’s ambassador in protest. The Israeli military said it was looking into the incident. The peacekeeping mission known as Unifil said in a statement that its headquarters and nearby positions “have been repeatedly hit”. It said the Israeli army also fired on a nearby bunker where peacekeepers were sheltering, damaging vehicles and a communication system. It said an Israeli drone was seen flying to the bunker’s entrance. The reports came as the Israeli military continued to pound Hezbollah targets in Lebanon while the militant group kept up its rocket attacks, setting off air raid sirens in parts of northern Israel. The Lebanese Health Ministry said an Israeli air strike on Thursday killed at least four people and wounded 17 in Karak, a village in eastern Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley. Unifil, which has more than 10,000 peacekeepers from dozens of countries, was created to oversee the withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Lebanon after Israel’s 1978 invasion. The United Nations expanded its mission following the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah, allowing peacekeepers to patrol a buffer zone set up along the border. The European Union’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, condemned Israel’s strikes on Unifil as “an inadmissible act, for which there is no justification”. “Another line has been dangerously crossed in Lebanon,” he wrote on social media. In Italy, which has about 1,000 soldiers deployed as part of Unifil, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said her government had formally protested to Israeli authorities. She added that she had received updates from the Italian contingent and praised the peacekeepers for their “valuable work”. Jordan’s Foreign Ministry also denounced the Israeli strikes on the peacekeepers as a “dangerous escalation” and “flagrant violation of international law”. Israel accuses Hezbollah of establishing militant infrastructure along the border in violation of the UN Security Council resolution that ended the 2006 war. It has warned people to evacuate from dozens of communities in southern Lebanon, many of which are outside the buffer zone. The UN peacekeeping chief, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, said last week that the peacekeepers were staying in their positions on Lebanon’s southern border despite Israel’s request to vacate some areas before it launched its ground operation against Hezbollah. Hezbollah began firing rockets into Israel on October 8 2023 in support of Hamas and the Palestinians, drawing Israeli air strikes in retaliation. The fighting steadily escalated, and eventually boiled over into all-out war in recent weeks, with Israel carrying out waves of heavy strikes across Lebanon and launching the ground invasion. Hezbollah has expanded its rocket fire to more populated areas deeper inside Israel, causing few casualties but disrupting daily life. Israel says the ground invasion, which has so far focused on a narrow strip along the border, is aimed at pushing the militants back so that tens of thousands of Israelis can return to their homes in the north.
