Cleethorpes Christmas lights to be switched on by Wizard Of Oz panto cast

There’s no place like Cleethorpes this Friday with the cast of the resort’s Wizard Of Oz panto set to kick off the festive season in magical style.

The Christmas lights switch-on will take place at 6.15pm on November 29 outside St Peter’s Church – but there’ll be plenty going on before that too. Those attending will get the chance to meet characters from Parkway Cinema’s dazzling panto with the cinema also sponsoring this year’s centrepiece Christmas tree.

From 4pm, the Evening Christmas Makers Market will take place in the church hall, organised by Original Emporium Cleethorpes. Open until 8pm, it will feature plenty of fantastic items from local makers and artists.

Some of the resort’s independent businesses will stay open late for the festive event too. Meanwhile, there will be live entertainment including stilt walkers, street entertainers, and quite a few elves! The RNLI are set to come along too.

Part of St Peter’s Avenue, between Albert Road and Mill Road, will be closed from 4pm until 8pm so the switch-on can take place.

The Wizard Of Oz, from TaleGate Theatre Productions, is being performed live on stage at Parkway Cleethorpes on a number of dates from Saturday, December 14 until Monday, December 30.

Former Tory MP Dame Andrea Jenkyns joins Reform UK

Former Conservative MP Dame Andrea Jenkyns has joined Reform UK and will run to be mayor of Lincolnshire. Dame Andrea joined Reform UK leader Nigel Farage at a press conference where he announced her defection and said she had become the 100,000th member of his party. She will run for the newly created role of Greater Lincolnshire Mayor in the May local elections. Meanwhile, former party deputy leader Ben Habib said he was leaving the party. Mr Farage said his party has approved more than 1,000 candidates for the elections. The former Tory minister used a photo of Mr Farage on her election campaign leaflet earlier this year – when she was campaigning to keep her Conservative seat. Asked how long she had been thinking about defecting, Dame Andrea said she has “always respected” Mr Farage and noted her work with Richard Tice during Brexit. She said: “We are politically aligned. And how long have I been thinking about it? Well, I mean, I was tempted before the general election, but I am a loyal person to a party. “I might not be loyal to prime ministers, as we’ve seen in the past, but I’m loyal to parties, and I believed, as I said, in going down with that ship fighting. “I was elected as a Conservative, and I got knocked out as a Conservative but I feel, unfortunately, the party has become tired.” Dame Andrea was a staunch supporter of Brexit and Boris Johnson. She submitted a no-confidence letter in former prime minister Rishi Sunak last November. As a Tory, she called for a manifesto pledge to hold a referendum on whether to leave the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). A Conservative Party spokesman said: “Reform may have gained one new member but it took just 12 minutes after the announcement for them to lose a founder and former deputy leader of their party. This tells you all you need to know about their ‘professionalisation’. “The Conservative Party knows it has work to do to renew the party and win back the support of the British people and that work has already started with Kemi Badenoch as leader. “The best way to defeat Labour at local or national level is to vote Conservative.” Former Reform deputy leader Mr Habib said he was “saddened” that he could no longer support the party. “I’m saddened to share that I can no longer support Reform UK. Their decision to silence me from speaking to branches and reluctance to democratise have left me with no choice,” he posted on X. Clacton MP Mr Farage said he had talked to other Tory MPs about joining Reform but said it was “not my priority” and that he is “not going chasing people”. “This is not designed to be an alternative Conservative Party. This is a completely different, fresh political movement,” he said. Mr Farage said Reform UK now has more than 400 branches up and running and that the party has vetted and approved more than 1,000 candidates for the May 2026 local elections, out of 2,200 it needs. “We put in place vetting standards far more rigorous than any political party in Britain has ever undergone before for people standing for local election,” he said. “Those candidates will be beginning to be adopted, in fact, starting at the end of this week.” He did not say whether he had already known the full extent of Reform MP James McMurdock’s assault conviction 18 years ago, which The Times reported last week went further than previously known publicly. The former investment banker did not publicly disclose his conviction for assault before being elected and claimed he had “pushed” his partner when details were first revealed this summer. But an official record of his sentencing obtained by the newspaper showed he was detained in a youth offenders’ institution for 21 days for kicking the victim “around four times”. Mr Farage said on Thursday: “It was a long time ago, he’s been forgiven.” He reiterated that for the July election, “hundreds of candidates had not been through a vetting procedure at all of any kind”. Asked if in future, Reform candidates could be people who have served time in prison, he said: “All sorts of people in life get second chances but we are going to set a very, very high standard.” Mr Farage also celebrated his personal TikTok reaching one million followers, half of whom he said were under the age of 25. Gregg Wallace stepping away from MasterChef amid external review

Gregg Wallace is to step away from presenting BBC cooking show MasterChef while complaints made by individuals about historical allegations of misconduct are externally reviewed. It comes as the 60-year-old faces allegations of inappropriate sexual comments from 13 people across a range of shows over a 17-year period, as reported by BBC News which said it sent a letter to the TV star’s representatives earlier this week. Among the BBC News complainants is former Newsnight host Kirsty Wark, who alleged he told jokes of a “sexualised nature” when she was competing on Celebrity MasterChef in 2011. Wark told the outlet that on two occasions Wallace relayed stories and jokes of a “sexualised nature” in front of contestants and crew and that she felt they were “really, really in the wrong place”. BBC News said it had been told of other allegations, including the presenter “talking openly about his sex life, taking his top off in front of a female worker saying he wanted to ‘give her a fashion show’, and telling a junior female colleague he was not wearing any boxer shorts under his jeans”. The TV star’s lawyers say “it is entirely false that he engages in behaviour of a sexually harassing nature”, BBC News reported. Earlier on Thursday, it was announced that Wallace is “committed to fully co-operating” with an external review by MasterChef’s production company, Banijay UK. A statement said: “This week the BBC received complaints from individuals in relation to historical allegations of misconduct while working with presenter Gregg Wallace on one of our shows. “Whilst these complainants have not raised the allegations directly with our show producers or parent company Banijay UK, we feel that it is appropriate to conduct an immediate, external review to fully and impartially investigate. “While this review is under way, Gregg Wallace will be stepping away from his role on MasterChef and is committed to fully co-operating throughout the process. “Banijay UK’s duty of care to staff is always a priority and our expectations regarding behaviour are made clear to both cast and crew on all productions, with multiple ways of raising concerns, including anonymously, clearly promoted on set. “Whilst these are historical allegations, incidences brought to our attention where these expectations are not met are thoroughly investigated and addressed appropriately.” The statement added: “If anyone would like to talk to us or raise any issues or concerns, then they can contact speakup@banijayuk.com in confidence.” A BBC spokesman said: “We take any issues that are raised with us seriously and we have robust processes in place to deal with them. “We are always clear that any behaviour which falls below the standards expected by the BBC will not be tolerated. “Where an individual is contracted directly by an external production company we share any complaints or concerns with that company and we will always support them when addressing them.” Wallace is best known for co-presenting MasterChef alongside John Torode since 2005, as well as its spin-offs Celebrity MasterChef and MasterChef: The Professionals. Recorded episodes of MasterChef: The Professionals featuring Wallace will transmit as planned, with the next episode due to air on Thursday, the PA news agency understands. Wallace was the original presenter of the BBC show Saturday Kitchen in 2002 and has also featured on Eat Well For Less, Inside The Factory, Turn Back Time, Harvest, and Supermarket Secrets. He was made an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2022 for his services to food and charity. Wallace took part in Strictly Come Dancing in 2014 and was partnered with Aliona Vilani.
