Co op to open dozens of new stores in 2025

The Co-op is planning to open 75 new stores across the UK this year and refurbish scores of existing sites, the company has announced.

The new stores will be both Co-op and franchise-run, building on an increase in franchises in 2024, including on more university campus sites, a first Co-op in a hospital as well as on petrol forecourts.

Matt Hood, Co-op’s managing director, said: “We want everyone to have easy and convenient access to a Co-op store, wherever they live, and this year we are completely focused on achieving that through an ambitious and exciting new stores strategy.

“Not only are we a membership organisation owned by our six million members, we are experts in convenience shopping, where we combine great quality products, value and deals and ethical retailing with quick online delivery services, community participation and additional customer services.”

The first new Co-op stores to open in early 2025 will be in Salford and Newcastle Upon Tyne.

The Co-op also announced plans to install up to 76,000 solar panels on up to 700 of its sites over the next three years.

Kemi Badenoch has called for a national inquiry into the UK’s “rape gangs scandal”, after Elon Musk hit out at Sir Keir Starmer over the issue. The Conservative Party leader made the call in a post to X on Thursday, arguing that “2025 must be the year that the victims start to get justice”. This comes after US billionaire Mr Musk appeared to place blame at the Prime Minister’s door, as he argued that “rape gangs were allowed to exploit young girls without facing justice” during Sir Keir’s time as Director of Public Prosecutions. Reform UK MP for Great Yarmouth Rupert Lowe also called for an inquiry into the issue on Thursday, arguing it has been “disgracefully ignored and suppressed for too long”. In her post, Mrs Badenoch wrote: “The time is long overdue for a full national inquiry into the rape gangs scandal. “Trials have taken place all over the country in recent years but no one in authority has joined the dots. “2025 must be the year that the victims start to get justice.” Responding to Mrs Badenoch, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage said: “Talk is cheap. The Conservatives had 14 years in government to launch an inquiry. “The establishment has failed the victims of grooming gangs on every level.” Prior to this, Tesla boss Mr Musk had written on X: “In the UK, serious crimes such as rape require the Crown Prosecution Service’s approval for the police to charge suspects. “Who was the head of the CPS when rape gangs were allowed to exploit young girls without facing justice? “Keir Starmer, 2008-2013.” Mr Musk also criticised safeguarding minister Jess Phillips, stating she “deserves to be in prison”, after she denied requests from Oldham Council to lead a public inquiry into child sexual exploitation in Oldham. In a letter to the council, Ms Phillips said she believes it is “for Oldham Council alone to decide to commission an inquiry into child sexual exploitation locally, rather than for the Government to intervene”. An Oldham Council spokesman said: “Survivors sit at the heart of our work to end child sexual exploitation. Whatever happens in terms of future inquiries, we have promised them that their wishes will be paramount, and we will not renege on that pledge.” Mr Lowe said the British people should be able to “see for themselves the extent of the horror” and that the Government should publish “all detail”. He added: “What is the Home Office currently doing in order to prevent ongoing grooming, rape, exploitation or abuse of young British girls? How many girls are estimated to still be involved with these gangs? “Will they publish a full nationality breakdown of those convicted for such offences, along with the location of their crimes?” The Independent Inquiry into Child Sex Abuse, which published its final report in 2022, described the sexual abuse of children as an “epidemic that leaves tens of thousands of victims in its poisonous wake”. Led by Professor Alexis Jay, the inquiry looked into abuse by organised groups following multiple convictions of sexual offences against children across the UK between 2010-2014, including in Rotherham, Cornwall, Derbyshire, Rochdale and Bristol. In November last year, Professor Jay said she felt “frustrated” that none of the probe’s 20 recommendations had been implemented more than two years after its conclusion. She said: “It’s a difficult subject matter, but it is essential that there’s some public understanding of it. “But we can only do what we can to press the Government to look at the delivery of all of this. “It doesn’t need more consultation, it does not need more research or discussion, it just needs to be done.” The Home Office has been contacted for comment. Cold snap could put elderly at risk of death as fuel payments cap criticised

An imminent cold snap could put the elderly at risk of death, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has warned as a charity criticised the Government’s decision to limit winter fuel payments. The UKHSA has issued cold weather health alerts for all of England ahead of a week of low temperatures. Amber alerts have been issued from 12pm on Thursday until January 8, meaning a rise in deaths, particularly among those aged 65 and over or with health conditions, is likely, the UKHSA said. Temperatures could fall as low as minus 8C on Thursday night in rural southern Scotland and northern England, the Met Office said. It will also be cold in rural Wales and the south west of England with minus 6C expected. Age UK director Caroline Abrahams said the Government’s decision to limit the winter fuel allowance to only the poorest pensioners will be put “into sharp relief” by the cold snap. Ms Abrahams said the charity had already been contacted by older people “worrying about what to do when this moment arrived”. From this winter, only people on pension credit or certain other benefits will receive the winter fuel payments while more than nine million others are set to be stripped of the allowance. “We urge older people to do everything they can to stay warm, even if that means risking spending more on their heating than they feel they can afford,” the charity director said. “The energy companies are under an obligation to help if you are struggling and there may be support available from your local council too.” Meanwhile, fresh weather warnings have been issued by the Met Office for ice ahead of a blast of snow over the weekend. The yellow warning indicates there could be icy surfaces in northern and western Scotland, the north west of England and Northern Ireland. It will remain in place from 5pm on Thursday until 10am on Friday morning, and could make for difficult travelling conditions, the forecaster warned. A snow and ice warning is also in place covering parts of northern Scotland between 4pm on Thursday and 10am on Friday. Scattered wintry showers will be replaced by a longer spell of rain and sleet on Thursday night, particularly across western Scotland and Northern Ireland. As temperatures dip below freezing, this will lead to a risk of ice on untreated surfaces, the forecaster said. A yellow warning is in place from noon on Saturday until 9am on Monday and covers all regions of England other than the South West, the majority of Wales and parts of southern Scotland. About 5cm of snow is expected widely across the Midlands, Wales and northern England, with as much as 20-30cm over high ground in Wales and the Pennines, the forecaster added. Strong winds could lead to snow drifts in some areas, and freezing rain as temperatures creep up could add to the risk of ice. Met Office meteorologist Tom Morgan said: “At the moment we’ve issued a very large snow warning for Saturday until Monday but it doesn’t mean that everywhere within that warning could see snow, it’s just a heads-up there could be some impacts.” On Thursday, London councils activated an emergency accommodation protocol for people sleeping rough in freezing conditions.
