Fate of Ashby venue combining adventure golf and escape room to be revealed after neighbours object

A new leisure venue combining mini-golf, an escape room and a bar awaits licensing approval after several neighbours objected.

The Paint Shop, owned by Christopher Shaw, partially opened at 253-255 Ashby High Street on October 13, under a temporary licence. Mr Shaw is seeking full licence approval for the business. However, there have been six objectors to the scheme and mediation was unsuccessful.

Councillors heard the case for and against at a licensing meeting yesterday (Thursday). “We’re a family friendly venue, which will provide fun and exciting activities,” Mr Shaw told councillors.

Mr Shaw said the business would create jobs for the local community. On average, 70 per cent of bookings for an existing escape room, which he ran in St Mary’s Street, Scunthorpe, were from out of town.

The Paint Shop would employ a Challenge 25 policy on the sale of alcohol, he promised, and no under-18s would be allowed in after 9.30pm. “We aren’t a nightclub, we aren’t a live music venue. On nights we have live music, the live music will be finished by 11pm.”

CCTV cameras and security measures would deter anti-social behaviour in the area, he said. Objections to the scheme touched on the prevention of crime and disorder, and prevention of a public nuisance.

Several of the objectors attended the meeting to argue against approval. Deborah Kendray spoke on behalf of herself and two residents of neighbouring Lindley Street. “Ashby High Street is already noisy enough at night, particularly at weekends with patrons of pubs and clubs in the area,” she said. “Our worry with such an activity-based product, people will linger long after, discussing their experience and how much fun or not they’ve had.”

Cllr Mick Grant (Ashby Central Ward) said he wanted to see information on how many people would be in the venue, and if it would be soundproofed, though for procedural reasons he could not formally ask for these things in the meeting.

Mr Shaw indicated a willingness to have glazed, soundproofed upper-floor windows for the escape room. An application document suggested that the bar would have seating and table capacity for about 70 people. The mini-golf elements would be a nine-hole adventure golf course.

Speaking after the meeting, Cllr Grant said: “I haven’t got anything against it, I think it will be good for Ashby High Street.” He recognised the concerns of neighbouring residents, however, and had sent out letters to residents to ensure they knew of the application.

The licensing committee adjourned to decide behind closed doors whether to grant the licence to The Paint Shop. Public notice of the decision is expected within days.
