Fire crews tackle blaze in Scunthorpe as man is arrested

A man is in police custody after a suspected arson in Scunthorpe.

Fire crews were still at the scene, in Ashby Road, dampening down this morning, with local residents urged to keep windows and doors shut and motorists advised to avoid the area. A spokesperson for Humberside Police said: “We were called to attend a property on Ashby Road after receiving reports of a house on fire at around 2.40am today, Tuesday, November 5.

“As a result of the fire, two properties suffered damaged. Thankfully, nobody was injured.

“Following police enquiries, a 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of arson with intent. He remains in our custody whilst enquiries continue. Anyone that witnessed the incident, or anybody acting suspiciously in the area at the time of the fire, is asked to call our non-emergency 101 line quoting log 43 of 5 November.

“Alternatively, you can report information via the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.” Humberside Fire & Rescue was initially called to an address in Ashby Road at about 2.30am.

A blaze was said to be in the front bedroom of a flat, which had fully damaged the room and caused extensive damage to the roof of the property, with smoke damage to the rest of the first floor and ground floor flat. Firefighters using breathing apparatus, two hose reels and an aerial ladder platform tackled the fire, with no casualties reported.

A spokesperson for Humberside Fire & Rescue said crews were on site until about 3.50am but that the fire had “unfortunately reignited and continued to burn”, prompting another callout at about 9.15am to the same address. Thick smoke could be seen billowing out of the top of the property, which is next door to a Tesco Express store, earlier today.

The spokesperson said three fire appliances, and an aerial ladder platform, were at the property after the second call, with a need to stabilise the chimney. They confirmed people had either self-evacuated or been led out of the property and that no ambulances had been called.

“There will be further investigations later today or tomorrow. We will be working closely with police.”
