A former Methodist Church will be converted into a home.
Ealand Methodist Church was put on the market in spring 2023, with a £200,000 guide price, and sold for £202,000. The church dates back to 1882.
It was marketed two years ago for “multiple imaginative new uses”, including as residential housing. A couple applied earlier this year to convert it into a four-bed home.
This and a separate outline application to build a detached home on what was the site of a Sunday school have been approved. Read on below for more about recent planning developments in North Lincolnshire Council area.
Ealand Methodist Church
The Methodist Church closed in 2021. Congregation numbers had dwindled, making it not economically viable to continue to run. It was successfully auctioned in May 2023.
“Externally, the proposal is to sympathetically convert the main building into a two storey dwelling with minimal alterations,” to the outside, Airedale Architects state on behalf of the applicants in a planning document. Because of the length of time it has been closed, and with Crowle Methodist Church less than two miles away remaining active, a council officer viewed the loss of a community facility as not an issue in this case.
Pub conversion in Scawby
Approval has been granted to fresh plans to convert a former public house in Scawby. In 2020, a hybrid application was made to convert King William IV to residential, and outline permission to demolish and replace with three dormer bungalows.
This was permitted, but no progress was made on the scheme in time before permission elapsed. Last year, a renewed application was made to place three homes at the site, to the rear of the former pub. This remains pending.
Now, conversion into a five-bed home has been granted for the former public house itself. The new home’s plans also include a dedicated music room. A council officer acknowledged the commercial loss from the conversion tempered the scheme’s benefits. However, the pub had not operated for some time, and there was “little prospect of it re-opening”.
New 10m tall sign at Scunthorpe retail park
There will be a new 10m tall sign at a Scunthorpe retail park. In an example of how specific a planning application can get, Motor Fuel Group Limited applied for a 10m high internally illuminated totem sign at Lakeside Retail Park.
The totem will be located off Lakeside Parkway by the car wash and petrol station and face towards the roundabout. It will simply display the Morrisons supermarket logo, who run the car wash.
Cricket club drives for improved practice facilities
Finally, Barton Town Cricket Club off Marsh Lane has applied to install a two lane practice facility. The 33m long by 7.3m wide nets would be located to the northern side of the cricket pitch.
The club has nets already, nearer its clubhouse. However, its location and escaping balls “provide an unacceptable and frequent level of safety issue”, it is stated in a planning document. An increase in junior and senior players is behind the move to improve facilities. Subject to the planning process and securement of funding, the club aims for the new nets to be in place by summer.
The application has had a number of supportive comments, highlighting the cricket club’s place in the community. One person has commented: “Provision of new net facilities will allow the club to continue to safely make cricket available to as broad a cross-section of the community as possible.”
