From dentistry to the Yorkshire Dales: family firm changes career to acquire camping and guesthouse business

A family firm is swapping dentistry for tourism, after snapping up a Yorkshire Dales camping and guesthouse business.

Peter and Teresa Wakefield have acquired Colman’s of Aysgarth, a 1.7-acre site set within the Wensleydale hills of Aysgarth offering boutique guesthouse accommodation, a touring caravan park and campsite, as well as residential accommodation they will now turn into their new home. The deal – completed for an undisclosed sum – represents a career change for Mr Wakefield and their son Harry, who have until now worked as dentists. Peter Wakefield will be managing the guesthouse business while his son manages the campsite operations.

Newcastle law firm Hay & Kilner LLP acted for the Peter and Teresa Wakefield on their acquisition of the business, based close to the village of Aysgarth, Aysgarth Falls and a number of walking and cycling routes. The site is set along the Herriot Way, a popular four day, 52 mile walk, which runs through the lower end of the property, and it has been recognised with several awards, including Best Certificated Site, Warmest Club Welcome and Family Friendly Site in 2019 and Warmest Club Welcome 2022 by the Camping & Caravanning Club.

Hay & Kilner’s corporate team provided legal advice on the acquisition to the couple, acting simultaneously for them in the sale of their home, which was used to part-fund the transaction.

Peter Wakefield said: “We are absolutely thrilled to be the new owners of Colman’s of Aysgarth. It’s a complete career change from our former life in dentistry but we’re looking forward to our new life in the country and welcoming guests to this beautiful part of Yorkshire. As keen motorcyclists we also hope to attract bikers in the future and offer local tours.

“Thanks to the team at Hay & Kilner for their support in allowing us the opportunity to purchase this wonderful site.”

Thousands sign up to support healthcare research across Humber region

Hospital staff across the Humber region have been leading the way in clinical research throughout the year. As we approach the end of 2024, research and development teams from NHS Humber Health Partnership, which operates hospitals in Hull, Cottingham, Grimsby, Goole and Scunthorpe, as well as some community services, have conducted over 650 individual health research studies this year. More than 4,700 patients and users of the group’s health services across East Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire agreed to participate in research across 27 specialties this year, including cardiovascular disease, obesity, respiratory diseases, cancer, kidney disease, digestive diseases, diabetes, infectious diseases, and vascular disease. While many may envision clinical research as merely drug trials, these only form a small part of the research teams’ work, according to Professor Thozhukat Sathyapalan, Group Director for Research, Development and Innovation. He explained: “With the support of local academic partners and Hull York Medical School, hospitals across Hull and the Humber region are continuing to place themselves at the forefront of clinical research. “While some studies do look at the efficacy of drug treatments, many others investigate the effectiveness of therapeutic work with patients, or use questionnaires and patient data to look for trends or to influence treatment options going forward. “Being able to offer local people opportunities to get involved in research is really important, not only in terms of improving the health of the local population, but also in discovering and developing cures, providing access to new and emerging treatments, understanding how certain conditions can affect people, and even being able to attract the best healthcare staff and academics to our region. “We value every single person who helps us on our research journey, looking into many different conditions such as IBD, vascular disease and cancer, and would like to thank everyone who’s taken part or signed up to be involved this year for their willingness to help us and others like them. (Image: HULL UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITALS NHS TRUST) “Signing up to a trial doesn’t have to be difficult or time-consuming, but could make all the difference to thousands of other patients in the future, not just in our region but across the world.” One of the most popular studies over the past 12 months has been the Born and Bred in (BaBi) study, which uses existing data about local people to shape family health services and highlight societal changes that could improve long-term health outcomes for children and families. Having started in Hull in February, more than 1,200 people signed up in the first eight months, which is over three times the original target for the year, and in the last month, the same study has launched in Northern Lincolnshire too. Clinical teams from the region have also made their mark on the global stage, with members of Hull’s respiratory clinical trials team being among those invited to present their projects and potentially ground-breaking findings to international research colleagues. The projects presented include the FRONTIER Programme, a two-year initiative in partnership with Chiesi that focuses on undiagnosed COPD. This project was recently recognised as best practice in Westminster. During the first phase of the project, 201 patients who had previously attended an NHS Lung Health Check and reported symptoms of lung disease and/or had emphysema detected on their CT scan were invited back for further COPD testing. Over two thirds of these individuals, 136 people, received a COPD diagnosis. This suggests that the NHS Lung Health Check could also be a significant opportunity to identify and provide timely treatment for other respiratory illnesses, the NHS says. Thousands greet sun with cheers at Stonehenge to mark winter solstice

Thousands of people greeted the sun with cheers and applause as it rose over Stonehenge at the winter solstice. Those who observed the spectacle on Saturday at the neolithic monument in Wiltshire encountered a windy morning as they marked the shortest day. Chris Smith, 31, who had come to Stonehenge for the winter solstice for the first time, said he was there because of the “spiritual draw of the area”. He said: “This is all about renewal, rebirth, we’re entering into the new year, and it’s also a good time to acknowledge what’s taking place in the year that’s been. “For me, I’ve gone through a bit of a tumultuous year, there’s been lots that has taken place for me in the past 24 months, and this is an opportunity to consolidate everything that has taken place this year and bury that in the past and be able to move forward then into this next new year.” The civil servant added: “There’s such a vibe. I mean, if you look around, you’ve got everybody here, there’s such an energy in the space. “You can really feel it like it’s all good vibes. People are just here enjoying themselves, and that’s kind of one of the draws of these sorts of events. “We have got people here from all walks of life. This is the community. And I think in today’s age, this is a really important thing to do.” Julie Hypher said it felt “really important to come and honour the annual cycle”. She added it was “just amazing” with “so much energy”. Stonehenge is a monument built on the alignment of the midsummer sunrise and the midwinter sunset. It is believed that solstices have been celebrated at Stonehenge for thousands of years. The dates of the equinoxes and solstices vary because the Gregorian calendar does not exactly match the length of the tropical year – the time it takes the Earth to complete an orbit around the Sun. To realign the calendar with the tropical year, a leap day is introduced every four years and when this happens, the equinox and solstice dates shift back to the earlier date.
