A former flight attendant who swapped “flying to frying” has been left “delighted” after her mobile fish and chip business has been shortlisted in the UK’s top three.
Alison Brady, who launched A Salt n’ Battery Mobile Fish & Chips three years ago, will attend a prestigious awards ceremony in London next February after her business was shortlisted as the Fish and Chip Mobile Operator of the Year in the National Fish & Chips Awards 2025.
After working as a flight attendant for 26 years – serving the rich and famous on their private jets – Alison decided to do something completely out of her comfort zone and open her very own travelling fish and chip shop.
Speaking to Scunthorpe Live, Alison, who is based in Crowle, said: “When Covid happened, it really hit the industry I was in hard. I also do a bit of beauty, but that wasn’t working, so I started wondering what would work. I saw that a number of fish and chip shops were closing down, and I saw it as an opportunity to go to villages and towns who don’t have a fish and chip shop.
“We haven’t reinvented the wheel, but what we do, we do really well. We have fresh fish delivered from Grimsby every day, we don’t use frozen, and I make the chips myself from potatoes grown in Lincolnshire.
“Even the batter mixture is made with flour grown in Lincolnshire. We’re a proper local business using only locally sourced products, and we cater to vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free diets.
“I’ve got a strong customer service background because I was a flight attendant for 26 years, but I don’t have to jump in my car and drive down south multiple times a week now, and we do really well, going to neighbouring towns and villages and catering for weddings and parties. I always make the joke ‘from flying to frying’ with my customers.”
When asked how it felt to be shortlisted for the award, Alison said: “It was absolutely wonderful. It had been really quiet, and you have to apply to enter and it’s quite an in-depth process. You have to send lots of photos and information and they come and secret shop you.
“I was just delighted – we’ve only been going for three years, so it’s brilliant.”
