Green Party hosting Scunthorpe event in bid to find councillor candidates

Scunthorpe‘s Green Party is holding an event on Saturday as it plans to drum up interest in finding candidates for future local elections.

North Lincolnshire Council is currently made up of just the ruling Conservative group and the Labour opposition. No Liberal Democrats stood in the 2023 all-out elections, while the Greens stood in a smattering of wards, narrowly missing out on a win in Barton-upon-Humber.

The event on Saturday, February 22, at Scunthorpe Central Community Centre from 11am to 1pm, aims to kickstart a widening of the Greens’ candidate slate in the area. And they have recruited Scunthorpe constituency general election independent candidate Dr Abdul Butt to aid this.

Dr Butt got almost the exact same number of votes as the Green’s candidate in July’s general election, at just over 1,200. A local Green Party representative has told Scunthorpe Live Dr Butt is, along with old and new members of North Lincs Green Party, helping to look for future council candidates.

They said: “We have a few so far but aim to challenge in more seats, as the Greens have successfully been doing more and more of late. Saturday’s meeting is an opportunity to meet with Councillor Mothin Ali from Leeds and hear what he advises concerning how to make progress in urban areas. Barton Greens have been doing well in recent years and we aim to spread out.”

North Lincolnshire Council operates via all-out elections every four years and is not due to hold another until May 2027. That is, provided Lincolnshire local government reorganisation moves do not cause their postponement, or the council’s replacement by a larger authority.

An election that is taking place locally this year is that of the new Greater Lincolnshire Combined Authority Mayor, on Thursday, May 1. So far, the Green Party has not announced a candidate.
