Goals from Gavan Holohan and Abo Eisa gave the Mariners a comfortable lead, only for the Reds to strike twice in quick succession to go in 2-2 at half time. Former Mariner Danilo Orsi then snatched a 96th-minute winner for the visitors.

UK refuses to follow US lead declaring genocide in Sudan

The UK has refused to follow the US in declaring that a genocide is being committed in Sudan, but said those responsible for “atrocities” should be held to account. Foreign Office minister Anneliese Dodds told the Commons the UK Government’s position would be based on the International Criminal Court’s determination. Sudan descended into conflict in April 2023 after months of worsening tensions turned into open fighting between rival factions seeking control of the country. Earlier this month, America accused Sudan’s Rapid Support Force rebel group and proxies of committing genocide in the country and imposed sanctions on the group’s leaders. Responding to an urgent question from Conservative former minister Andrew Mitchell, Ms Dodds said: “The long-standing position of successive British governments is that it is for courts to decide whether genocide has occurred. “While the UK takes a different approach to genocide determination therefore, than the US does, we condemn what is happening in the strongest terms. Irrespective of any genocide determination, it is clear that atrocities have been committed in this conflict, those responsible must be held to account.” She added: “We are determined to do all we can, as the UK, to work with others, to press the warring parties to abide with international law and to protect civilians – collecting information, promoting prevention and ensuring accountability.” Shadow foreign secretary Dame Priti Patel said Sudan was “hurtling towards a man-made catastrophe on an unimaginable scale”, before adding: “Is it this Government’s intention to now go further on sanctions and to mirror the United States?” Ms Dodds replied: “We keep our sanctions under review, but we will not comment on future designations for reasons that I know she fully understands.” Liberal Democrat foreign affairs spokesman Calum Miller pressed the Government for a deadline on when it would decide whether genocide was taking place. He said: “In light of the judgment of the US administration, can the minister give the House a date by which the Government will have determined whether genocide is now being committed?” Ms Dodds said it was important there was “robustness” and “trust” in the determination, adding that it was “through determinations of those expert lawyers” at the International Criminal Court that decisions would be made. SNP MP Chris Law (Dundee Central) asked: “Why is it so reticent that time after time in this House, we cannot use the word genocide when it’s all around us and the evidence is there for us to see?” Ms Dodds replied: “This Government believes it’s critically important that we have an approach to determining genocide that’s consistent with our obligations – our obligations under the Genocide Convention and under the Rome Statute. “They’re incredibly important, because I talked about before, it is critical that we have trust internationally in that system, that we make sure there is a clear, impartial, and independent methodology for the determination of genocide.” John Slinger, Labour MP for Rugby, argued “more external pressure is needed from the international community to deter those who would commit war crimes” in Sudan. He asked the minister: “Irrespective of definitions of genocide, does (Ms Dodds) agree with me that more external pressure is needed from the international community to deter those who would commit war crimes, to make sure that humanitarian aid gets in, irrespective of local opposition?” She replied: “Yes, I do, on all counts.” Published: 13/01/2025 by Radio NewsHub

Streeting says nurses are backbone of our NHS after worker stabbed in hospital

Wes Streeting has described nurses as “the backbone of our NHS” after a staff member was left in a critical condition by a stabbing in a hospital’s acute medical unit (AMU). A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after the nurse, a woman in her 50s, was seriously injured at the Royal Oldham Hospital at about 11.30pm on Saturday, Greater Manchester Police said. It is believed a member of the public attacked the nurse with a bladed article or sharp instrument which was not a knife, the force added. The Health Secretary added that nurses “should be able to care for patients without fear of violence”. He posted on X saying: “My thoughts are with the nurse and her loved ones following this horrific attack at the Royal Oldham Hospital. “Nurses are the backbone of our NHS and should be able to care for patients without fear of violence. “We’re in touch with the trust and will update further as we can.” The nurse suffered serious injuries and remains in hospital for treatment. Her injuries are believed to be life-changing. A 37-year-old man was arrested at the scene, police said. He remains in police custody. The force said it is not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident and does not believe there is a threat to the wider public. NHS England chief executive Amanda Pritchard posted on X saying: “I am shocked by the horrific attack on a nurse at the Royal Oldham Hospital, as are all my colleagues at @NHSEngland. “Our thoughts are with her, her family and friends. “I would like to thank everyone who acted so quickly to help after this terrible assault. “Our staff deserve the right to come to work – to help others – without fear of being harmed. “We will provide all the support we can to those affected.” The Royal College of Nursing general secretary and chief executive Professor Nicola Ranger said: “This attack on a nurse is truly shocking and our thoughts are with the victim, her family and colleagues. “Nursing staff go to work to care for others and have every right to do so without the fear of violence. All employers have a duty to keep their staff safe and authorities must ensure those endangering healthcare professionals face the full force of the law.” Detective Sergeant Craig Roters, from the Oldham district, said: “This is a serious incident which has left a woman in a critical condition. “Our thoughts are with her family and colleagues, and we will continue to support them throughout this investigation. “The local community can expect to see an increase in police presence whilst we carry out inquiries, but they are also there to offer reassurance and answer any questions you may have. “We know that news of this nature will come as a shock, and if you have any concerns or anything you would like to share, please speak to them.” The trust that oversees the hospital said it was “shocked and saddened” by the stabbing. Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust also said its focus was on supporting the nurse, and added that all services at the hospital remain open. Chief nursing officer Heather Caudle said: “We are incredibly shocked and saddened by last night’s incident and our focus is on supporting the colleague involved and their family. “Our thoughts are also with colleagues and patients who were there at the time of the incident and for whom this has been distressing and frightening. “We will continue to support Greater Manchester Police with their inquiries. “All services at the Royal Oldham Hospital remain open.” Jim McMahon, MP for Oldham West, Chadderton and Royton, called the stabbing a “senseless attack” and wished the victim a full recovery.
