Grimsby Town chairman confident caretaker managers can ‘steady the ship’ – and they are ‘an option’

There is confidence within Grimsby Town that caretaker managers Ben Davies and Shaun Pearson can steer the team away from danger in the short term with quick results essential.

The pair, who were already coaches at the club supporting the departing manager and assistant duo of Paul Hurst and Chris Doig, have a big task at hand to pick the team off the floor after a tough first few months of the season.

Mariners chairman Jason Stockwood has been impressed with how members of staff at the club, including the remaining coaches, have banded together quickly to make sure the club has the best chance of getting through this interim period without further damage on the pitch.

He said: “Speaking to Shaun [Pearson] and Ben [Davies], I’m really confident that we’ve got a chance to steady the ship and that is no disrespect towards Paul [Hurst] and Chris [Doig], we just really wanted to think about making sure that the wheels didn’t come off.

“We’re now in this process where we’re going to take our time to make sure we bring in the right people for the next stage and quite frankly, this a number of weeks now for Shaun and Ben to have an interview process as well if they can turn things around.

“If we can do well during this interim period then we are not discounting them as an option as well. There has been a lot of positive energy from them to really change the trajectory and add their ideas to the group.”

Davies will be able to call upon previous experience during this period having been the temporary leader during the last management change at the club which was almost three years ago.

Pearson is still very young in his coaching career, having built some experience over time by helping mentor the youth teams during his spells as a player at the club and in the last couple of months since calling time on his playing career.

Goalkeeper coach Steve Croudson also remains at the club to support, with members of the youth team staff ready to step up when needed, and Stcokwood believes that unity shown will see the club through this tough time.

“It will take a little while to adjust,” the Grimsby chair admitted. “I’m confident that we’ve got good people in the organisation and I’m delighted by the response of the staff at the club since the weekend who have stepped in and offered to help where possible.

“I’m confident that we’ll get through this period and improve as a result, but it is a day-by-day process. We’re glad we’ve brought in coaches in the past that will help us now, Ben has been here a while but Shaun has come in recently as well as Steve Croudson.

“Having three coaches for now is good, it’s solid and they were doing support work anyway. We’ve got a range of high-quality coaches in the academy that have offered support as well, so I think we’re in good shape for now.”
