Grimsby Town’s run of defeats continues with 1-0 loss at Doncaster Rovers

Grimsby Town’s concerning run of form continued with a 1-0 defeat at Doncaster Rovers.

A Joe Ironside penalty was the difference as Doncaster triumphed in a tight contest against the Mariners.

Ironside smashed home from the spot on 72 minutes after substitute Kyle Hurst was brought down by Gavan Holohan.

There had been little between the two sides for the majority of the contest, with both struggling for sustained possession.

Harry Clifton headed over the bar from a great position as Town started the brighter.

Ironside was picked out by Tom Nixon in an excellent position but fired over before Doncaster keeper Louis Jones made a solid save to keep out Holohan’s low drive.

Danny Rose struck the inside of the post early in the second half for Town while Ironside flicked a header wide from a Jack Senior cross.

After Ironside gave Rovers the lead, 18 minutes from time, it was Doncaster who had the better of the opportunities. Hurst drilled into the side netting at the end of a breakaway while Owen Bailey rattled the bar with a first-time effort from a corner.

The Mariners have now played five games without a league win, with their last three points coming on October 3 at home to Barrow with only one point collected since then. The result leaves them 21st in League Two, four points above Tranmere Rovers and Sutton United who occupy the bottom two places.

Grimsby next head to National League South side Slough Town in the first round of the FA Cup on Sunday, November 5 before returning to league action at Blundell Park the following Saturday when they will face Morecambe.
