When it comes to the ultimate messy, treat-yourself takeaway, Beast Burger is definitely up there with one of my favourites.
Based at Freeman Street Market in Grimsby, the eatery has gone from strength to strength since opening in the summer of 2019, taking North East Lincolnshire by storm with its iconic stacker burgers with a range of quirky fillings available.
Since trying Beast Burger for the first time a couple of years back, I’ve been – like most people – completely won over ever since.
I usually go for the Garlic Mushroom Swiss Burger, which combines two 3oz “smash patties” with Swiss cheese, garlic mushrooms and garlic mayo, and have also tried the Biscoff Beast Burger, in which the burger patties, American cheese and bacon are slathered in a generous helping of delicious Lotus ‘Biscoff’ spread.
But this time round, on a “treat day” where I found myself craving a Beast Burger takeaway, I decided to go for something a bit different. I went for the Peanut Butter Chilli Time Burger, which combines two burger patties with American cheese, bacon, peanut butter and scotch bonnet chilli jam.
I do like a bit of spice – and recently tried the infamous American snack that is ‘peanut butter jelly’ for the first time ever in my 30 years and couldn’t get enough – so I thought I’d probably be a fan of this burger. And unsurprisingly, I wasn’t wrong.
I ordered the burger, along with the OG Mac ‘n Cheese side (macaroni with homemade cheese sauce, mozzarella, cheddar, parmesan and Ritz crumb cracker) and a Strawberry milkshake, on JustEat, and it came within about half an hour.
The burger was absolutely delicious – the ultimate culinary ‘guilty pleasure’ – and the combination of peanut butter and the scotch bonnet chilli jam worked amazingly. The chilli jam wasn’t as hot as I thought it’d be, considering the scotch bonnet is among some of the hottest chilli peppers.
But nevertheless, I was a huge fan. The meat patties were juicy and tender, the bacon bits were perfectly crispy, and there was a generous helping of peanut butter slathered amongst the fillings that made the burger’s flavour entirely one of its own.
The strawberry milkshake was probably up there with one of the best I’ve ever had. It was creamy and moreish without being too sweet, and acted as the perfect accompaniment to my “cheat day” meal.
And, if you’re a big cheese fan, I’d highly recommend one of the Mac ‘n Cheese options as a side. The portion size was surprisingly big, considering it was a side dish, but I wasn’t complaining. The combination of cheese added to the sauce gave it a salty, rich flavour, and the Ritz crackers sprinkled on top just gave it that something extra.
I only wish I’d ordered something from the Grimsby and Clee Eats app instead. Not long after placing my order, a notification popped up on my phone advertising the special Beast Burger Christmas menu that is only available on there – which was somewhat frustrating. I might just have to squeeze in another one as a little festive treat to myself!
I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone who tried Beast Burger and didn’t like it, to be honest. Every time I’ve had something from there I’ve been really impressed – their burgers are truly unique, and it’s no wonder the business has been so successful since first emerging in the area five years ago.
