Man, 31, arrested after drugs and cash discovered in Scunthorpe property

A 31-year-old man has been arrested after police discovered drugs and cash inside a Scunthorpe property.

On Friday, officers carried out a warrant at a property on Valley View Drive in Bottesford, where around £3,000 worth of suspected cannabis and around £2,000 in cash was discovered.

A man, 31, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of class B drugs, possession of criminal property, possession of an offensive weapon in a private place and being concerned in the supply of a class A drug.

He has since been released on conditional bail whilst police continue with their enquiries.

Wind speeds top 90mph as Storm Darragh starts to lash UK

Gusts of 93mph have been recorded as Storm Darragh hit the UK. Millions of people have been warned to stay indoors, thousands are without power, and trains have been cancelled as the Government’s “risk to life” alert came into force. The emergency alert came into effect at 1am on Saturday and was sent to people within the area covered by the Met Office’s rare red warning for wind in parts of Wales and south-west England. It was the largest use of the warning system yet, with the alert urging residents to avoid driving and to “stay indoors if you can”. Speaking to Sky News, Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds described the storm as a “challenging situation”. He added: “About three million homes will have had the emergency alert system to their mobile phone. I would just encourage anyone who has had that to follow the advice.” He added: “Where you can, stay inside, don’t put yourself at risk, and just follow the advice at all times.” The Cabinet Office’s emergency alert system sent a message to every compatible mobile phone in the impacted areas, containing information about the red warning and guidance on how to stay safe. Mobile phones made a loud siren-like sound even if they were set on silent, with the sound and vibration lasting for about 10 seconds, although some people claimed they did not receive it. The Met Office confirmed to the PA news agency that wind gusts of up to 93mph were recorded overnight in Capel Curig in North Wales, with 92mph in Aberdaron on the Llyn Peninsula. Winds in other parts of Wales topped 80mph, while gusts of up to 77mph were recorded in Northern Ireland and south-west England, the forecaster said. Tom Morgan of the Met Office said that as of 7am the storm was at its peak, but higher wind speed totals are “possible” later in the morning. The centre of the storm, meaning winds are calmer, was across north-east England. Thousands of people in Northern Ireland, England and Wales were left without power. The Energy Networks Association said around 86,000 homes in England, Scotland and Wales were without power as of 9am. A spokesperson said around 385,000 customers were reconnected overnight, with more than 1,000 engineers ready to be deployed. National Grid said that as of 8am more than 55,000 customers were off supply across the South West, south Wales and the west Midlands due to Storm Darragh. It said the majority of these were in south Wales. Meanwhile, around 376,000 customers have had their power restored by its teams since the start of the storm. A note on the Northern Ireland Electricity Network’s website said the authority was unable to provide estimated restoration times. “Due to the number of faults we are currently experiencing on the network, we are unable to provide an estimated restoration time for your electricity supply at this time,” it read. “We are working to restore supplies as quickly and safely as possible.” National Highways said both the Prince of Wales Bridge, M4 and the Severn Bridge, M48, which connect south-west England to Wales were closed because of strong winds. Network Rail Wales said owing to a fallen tree, all train services on the North Wales Coast Line are suspended until further notice. National Highways advised the QEII Bridge at Dartford Crossing in England’s South East had also been closed due to strong winds. The Merseyside Premier League derby between Everton and Liverpool at Goodison Park that was due to kick off at lunchtime was postponed. The Met Office issued the red weather warning – the most serious type – on Friday for wind, meaning dangerous weather is expected and people are urged to take action to keep themselves and others safe. The now-expired warning, which has led to the cancellation of events including Christmas attractions, was in place from 3am to 11am on Saturday. All the Royal Parks are closed, including their cafes, kiosks, park roads and cycleways, meaning Winter Wonderland in London will not be open. Longleat Safari Park in Wiltshire said on its website that it would not open on Saturday for safety reasons, while Bristol Zoo is also closed. The Met Office warned of “damaging winds” with gusts of 90mph possible over the coasts and hills of West and South Wales. Forecasters say the strongest winds will begin to ease from late morning. A separate amber warning covering a larger stretch of the west coast of the UK, stretching from southern Scotland to Cornwall, and Northern Ireland is in place from 1am until 9pm. Flying debris and falling trees could pose a risk to life while large waves and beach material could be thrown on to coastal roads and seafronts. There could also be damage to buildings and homes, with roofs blown off and power lines brought down, as well as power cuts affecting other services such as mobile phone coverage. Dublin airport confirmed it had received a number of flights bound for other airports and were diverted due to the fourth named storm of the season. Several British Airways flights to and from Heathrow, Paris, the United States and the Netherlands were also cancelled. Storm Darragh is also expected to bring heavy rain over the weekend, with 15 flood warnings in place in England on Saturday. The Environment Agency said river flooding is likely in parts of Hereford. An amber warning for rain is in place in Wales from 3am to 6pm on Saturday with heavy rain likely to lead to disruption to transport and infrastructure. A yellow warning for rain is in place for Northern Ireland and Wales, both of which were badly affected by flooding during Storm Bert, as well as parts of Scotland from 3pm on Friday until noon on Saturday. The Met Office said periods of heavy rain in south and mid-Wales through Saturday are likely to see 20-30mm fall in three to six hours. Devolved leaders hail improved relationships with UK Government under Labour

Working with the Conservatives when they were in government “could not have been more awful” but relationships with Westminster are “incomparably better” now Labour is in power, John Swinney has said. The Scottish First Minister made the comment after talks with Sir Keir Starmer in Edinburgh, with the Prime Minister and the leaders of all the devolved administrations joining the British-Irish Council summit on Friday. Mr Swinney said afterwards he had “made no secret of the fact that relationships between the Scottish Government and the United Kingdom Government today are incomparably better than they were immediately before the general election”. Hitting out at the Tories, he said: “The relationship with the last United Kingdom government latterly – I speak only for the government I lead – was awful. “They could not have been more disrespectful, they could not have been more awful.” The SNP Government at Holyrood and the Conservative administration at Westminster clashed on a range of issues over the years, including transgender rights and the Scottish Government’s plans for a deposit return scheme for drinks cans and bottles. Mr Swinney said he has held a number of meetings with Sir Keir since Labour’s election victory in July. Just days after moving into Downing Street, the Labour leader travelled to Edinburgh for talks with the First Minister, and Mr Swinney said the pair have had a “number of one-to-one meetings” since then, including on Friday morning. He added that Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster Pat McFadden – a senior figure in Sir Keir’s Government – has also been involved in “engagement and dialogue” with the devolved administrations. “The dialogue is incomparably better,” Mr Swinney said, adding that he wants the governments to “work constructively to secure the best outcomes for the people we represent”. The First Minister said while the leaders may not agree on everything, they “come at these discussions in good faith”. Mr Swinney’s comments were echoed by the first ministers of Northern Ireland and Wales. Michelle O’Neill, the Northern Ireland First Minister, stressed “it is how you disagree that is important”, as she complained: “I think the tenure of the Tories in government was one of disrespect, one that drove an austerity agenda that decimated our public services, one that very much left people behind.” With Labour having worked to improve relationships with the devolved governments, Ms O’Neill added: “I welcome the fact that there is a determination for a reset.” While she added it is “early days” and that relationships will be “tested of course over time”, the Sinn Fein politician added she believes there is a “genuine willingness” to work between the parties. Stormont’s deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly said the test for the UK Government will be whether it listens to concerns flagged by the devolved nations. The DUP minister said she raised issues around changes to inheritance tax on agricultural properties and the increase to employer national insurance contributions during the BIC meeting. “The key test for this Government will be, will they listen to us?” she said. “Will they listen to the many, many thousands of farmers from across the United Kingdom and their concern about agricultural relief? Will they listen to the thousands and thousands of businesses across the United Kingdom, across Northern Ireland, concerned about national insurance contributions? “I think that’s the test for this Government. We raised that today with them, and we’ll see what happens.” Welsh First Minister Eluned Morgan said: “You would expect me to say it has been a much better relationship as a Labour politician, and it genuinely has.” She added that the fact the Prime Minister had taken part in the BIC talks for the first time since 2007 “indicates an eagerness to make sure we co-operate”. Adding there has been a “transformation” in the relationship between the governments, she recalled: “We had a flooding in Wales last week and the Prime Minister picked up the phone that very evening to check if there was anything we needed. That would never have happened before.” Irish premier Simon Harris and deputy premier Micheal Martin also attended the BIC summit in Edinburgh, but neither participated in the post-event press conference, instead opting to head back to Ireland earlier than planned due to the incoming Storm Darragh. Speaking to reporters on the fringes of the event before departing, Mr Harris praised Sir Keir for his attendance, characterising it as a “really important step forward”. “We’ve had a very good British-Irish Council, it’s the 25th year of the British-Irish Council, a council that was set up under the structure of the Good Friday Agreement and indeed the first time in many years, I think since Gordon Brown, that we’ve had a British Prime Minister attend a working part of the council,” he said. “I really want to acknowledge that leadership from Prime Minister Starmer. “I think it is a really important step forward because this is an opportunity to come together across these islands to discuss issues of mutual concern.” Published: 07/12/2024 by Radio NewsHub
