A man and woman were arrested when two guns were seized on Monday, police said today.

On Monday, police officers put a cordon around a property in Plymouth Road while they searched for firearms. There will now be an increased police presence in the area, the lead detective said.

In a statement this afternoon, Humberside Police said: “Officers recovered two guns from a property on Plymouth Road in Scunthorpe yesterday (Monday 5 February) and two people are currently in our custody. A man, aged 47, and a woman, aged 54 were both arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm without a certificate.”

Detective Inspector Simon Archer said: “I can confirm following the discovery at the property a scene guard was put in place to allow further searches to be conducted. As a part of those searches, officers subsequently discovered what is believed to be a second gun which has now been seized.

“I appreciate that this may cause concern to members of the community. Residents can expect to see an increased police presence whilst detectives work to understand the full circumstances surrounding the discovery. I would encourage anybody who has any concerns to please come and speak to us.”

The man and woman remain in police custody whilst detectives continue to conduct lines of enquiry. People with any information about crime are asked to report it via our non-emergency 101 line or by speaking to local officers.

People are reminded to call 999 in an emergency or if there is a crime ongoing. Information can also be reported anonymously via the independent charity Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111.
