Man facing extradition for grooming offences and contractor fined £5,000 for unsafe working environment – Grimsby court round-up

A man ordered to be extradited for grooming offences, a contractor who failed to provide a safe working environment and a violent offender carrying a baseball bat in public – these are just some people who have appeared at Grimsby Magistrates’ Court in recent days.

While some cases were adjourned to be tried at a later date and others were sent to Grimsby Crown Court, magistrates still handed out prison sentences, suspended sentences and hefty fines for offenders from across northern Lincolnshire.

Here are nine cases that appeared at Grimsby Magistrates’ Court last week.

Adrian Newell, of Mill View, Brigg was handed a 24-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, after he indicated pleas of guilty to failing to identify unsafe scaffolding to ensure work was carried out without risks to health and safety whilst acting as a principal contractor, and failing to ensure that work at height was carried out in a safe manner. He was also fined £5,082 and given a £128 victim services surcharge.

Salvatore Bertino, 35, of Burke Street, Scunthorpe was ordered to be extradited to Italy after breaking a bail condition – in that he was unavailable for installation of tagging equipment – which he was ordered to comply with for the offence of grooming of children. His passport was also seized by police and he was ordered not to go near any international travel hub and not to apply for any travel documents.



Grimsby Magistrates Court

Cameron Reilly, 22, of no fixed abode was jailed for six months after he indicated pleas of guilty to carrying an offensive weapon in a public place, namely a baseball bat, and using or threatening unlawful violence towards another person.

Michael Whyte, 54, of St Luke’s Court, Grimsby indicated pleas of guilty to three counts of theft in which he stole three bottles of perfume, two electric shavers and an electric toothbrush worth £466 from Tesco, stole power tools worth £123 from B&Q and stole meat worth £120 from Spar. He was fined £500 and ordered to pay £405 in compensation.

Karl Clayton, 39, of Portman Road, Scunthorpe pleaded guilty to one count of assault by beating and one count of using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress. He was fined £400 and ordered to pay £50 in compensation.

Leslie Spence, 56, of Church Lane, Cadney indicated a plea of guilty to assaulting an emergency worker and pleaded guilty to assault by beating. He was fined £300.

Jennifer Rothernburg, 59, of Willing Way, Grimsby admitted using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour with intent to cause fear of or provoke unlawful violence at Birds Eye Social Club on Ladysmith Road. She also pleaded guilty to causing damage to a glass vase inside the venue. She was fined £120.

Jamie Woollam, 42, of Fraser Street, Grimsby admitted breaching a suspended sentence order by committing a further offence. He was originally handed the suspended sentence for stealing children’s clothes worth £330 from Next on two separate occasions, stealing tools worth £250 from Tesco and stealing beef joints worth £70 from Asda. He was jailed for 12 weeks.

Joshua Facer, 22, of Crosby Road, Grimsby was found guilty in his absence of driving without insurance. He was handed six points on his licence, fined £660, ordered to pay a victim services surcharge of £264 and costs of £110.
