A Scunthorpe boy who began competing in “one of the most physically demanding sports” at the age of six has gone from strength to strength doing what he loves – though his mum admits it “can be terrifying at times”.
Following in his dad’s footsteps, Jaydan Jackson was introduced to the world of motocross three years ago, and has won more than 15 trophies in that time.
Due to the high speeds, tricky terrain and potential for serious injury, motocross is often considered a dangerous sport to participate in – but Jaydan’s devoted mum, Paula, said she has “never been prouder” of her youngest son and ensures he is as safe as possible while competing.

Speaking to Scunthorpe Live, Paula said: “I ride a sports bike and his brothers do, so we are quite a sporty family, but it can be terrifying at times because it’s really dangerous. Accidents do happen, but you just have to make sure he’s protected and well educated. They’ve got to learn all about the bikes, respect the sport and be careful.
“He has to have the proper boots to protect his feet and ankles, he wears full body armour and a neck brace, a helmet, gloves, kneepads and elbow pads. It costs a lot of money, but it’s about safety first, and he only has all the best stuff, so he’s protected to the max.
“It’s one of the most physically-demanding sports and there’s a big commitment to it. They won’t allow them to go on the track unless they’re properly protected – a member of staff checks that they’re properly protected and everyone does everything possible to ensure they’re safe. There’s a risk to everything, but you’ve got to teach them to respect the sport, and the rewards outweigh the slight risk.
“It is dangerous, but the pros outweigh the cons. It’s like a family and they get a lot out of it. It’s a lovely atmosphere and it gets the kids outside – you won’t see an iPad or phone in sight. In between races, they’re just playing outside and being kids.”
In the space of just three years, Jaydan has taken part in competitions across the country and has won six races, been in the top three 20 times, and in the top five 30 times. He also spent a week training on a race track in Belgium to gain more experience.
Paula continued: “Since Jaydan started motocross he’s changed so much. He’s more outgoing, sociable and confident, and this is what sport does for a lot of kids. I’d recommend motocross as a sport to other parents because it gets kids outside and away from their TVs and Xboxes. Even if they don’t participate, just to go down and watch is so beneficial.
“His achievements make me feel so proud, I’m just so proud of him. He puts so much work into it, so seeing him achieve everything he has is just amazing, seeing him on that podium is just lovely. It’s a lovely community to be a part of.”
Jaydan is currently sponsored by several local companies – including MM Construction, Alloyfix and PJ Glazing – but more sponsors are always welcome to get on board, Paula said.
