While the cool and wet July so far may have had some considering reaching for the thermostat at times, things are about to heat up with possibly the hottest temperatures of the year so far on the way very soon.
Last week saw daytime highs of just 15C at its worst while overnight lows dropped well into single figures in some parts of northern Lincolnshire earlier in the month. However, the recovery of temperatures so far this week is set to push on even further with the mercury set to hit the high 20s on Friday.
While the day will mark exactly two years since the region – and country – saw record-breaking temperatures of up to 40C in some areas, it won’t be anywhere near as sweltering this time but still much warmer than of late with highs between 26 and 29C forecast in our region – perhaps a little cooler nearer the coast. The highest temperatures are expected at around 4pm on Friday with the warmest conditions further inland.

While the warm weather will continue into the weekend – albeit a bit cooler with highs of 26C on Saturday – it won’t last with daily highs falling back to around 21C on Sunday and into next week. It should stay mostly sunny throughout, though some wetter interludes are possible, particularly later on Saturday and into Sunday with a chance of heavy and thundery showers.
During the ‘mini heatwave’, the warmest conditions are expected to be in the East Midlands and south east of England where a yellow heat health alert has been issued which will be effective between 5pm on Thursday and 11pm on Saturday. This warns of ‘probable minor impacts’ across the health and social care sector due to the heat. In these areas, temperatures could push past 30C on Friday.
Speaking of the heat from Thursday onwards, Met Office meteorologist Annie Shuttleworth said: “We could be at around 26 or 27 degrees across southeastern areas, 25 across central areas of England so warmer than has been lately for sure. And that heat will build even further as we heat into Friday as well, likely peaking on Friday, possibly lasting into Saturday.”
The forecaster added: “As we look further towards the weekend, weather fronts will likely reintroduce some of this fresher air from the north and west.”
