Mum who started making fudge at home for ‘pocket money’ couldn’t be prouder as she opens first ever shop

A Scunthorpe mum-of-four who began cooking fudge in her kitchen at home as a hobby said she “couldn’t be prouder” as her business has skyrocketed in the decade since – so much so that she has orders from all over the country and has now opened her first ever shop.

Claire Brennan, 37, launched Want That Fudge UK in 2014 after her family and friends tried her fudge and encouraged her to start a business. After four years, business was booming so much that Claire “couldn’t keep up”.

Her husband, Pete, quit his full-time job to help her, and the couple built a triple-length garage conversion to operate the company out of. Within 18 months, the business had outgrown that, and they acquired their first industrial unit in June 2020.

Four years later and a decade after opening, Want That Fudge UK has opened its first ever shop in Scunthorpe, and stocks fudge in a range of flavours and formats, from Creme Egg slabs and salted caramel filled pies to Ferrero loaves and cookie dough wheels.

Claire said: “It’s been quite a journey. I started making fudge in 2014 after we’d had a new kitchen put in. The first time I made it, it was OK, but I practiced and practiced and started giving it out to friends and family. They said it was really good and that I should start my own business, so I did.

The shop looks amazing inside

“At first it was just to make a bit of extra pocket money, because we had four young children at the time, two of them being only two and one. But it went so well that I couldn’t keep up, and in 2018 my husband quit his job to help me. Business just kept growing and growing, and now we employ my mum and dad and our eldest daughter.”

The new Want That Fudge UK shop is situated at Unit 5C on Birkdale Road in Scunthorpe, and is open from 9am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 4pm on Saturdays.

“People are coming in who have been buying from us since 2014 and saying they can’t believe we’ve finally got a shop,” Claire said.

They offer a huge selection of fudge treats

“It’s so nice to have that face to face conversation with the customer rather than online. We’ve had customers coming in from as far as Manchester and Lincoln.

“How we make our fudge is a bit different because we do it the old-fashioned way. Each batch is booked and it takes two hours to do each one, so a lot of care and attention goes into it. All the products are hand-decorated and have lots of personal touches.

“We’re so proud of getting this far. Because we employ family it’s a nice feeling, being able to look after them and all work together. When I think back to how we did it in our kitchen at home to where we are now, it’s a very proud feeling.”
