Net Zero champion Chris Skidmore to address key Humber summit as it turns five

Chair of the Net Zero Review, Chris Skidmore, will address The Waterline Summit as a fifth year of spotlighting the Humber’s crucial role in helping fight climate change is marked.

The former Energy Minister, responsible for signing the UK’s net zero commitment into law, will speak live to the event that pulls together industry and academia in a united front for the vital challenge. It comes a year after he was commissioned to lead the independent analysis of the Government’s approach to its 2050 target.

The focal point of the launch event, this year held at Aura Innovation Centre, Mr Skidmore’s keynote will precede a panel discussion featuring Northern Powerhouse Partnership chief executive Henri Murison; RWE’s East Coast director Corrine Barry; co-chair of the COP 28 Future Leaders Network delegation for 2023, Arianna Abdul-Nour, and Professor of Environmental Humanities and interim director of the Energy and Environment Institute at University of Hull, Professor Briony McDonagh. Clare Hayward MBE, chair of the NP11, will host, with a refreshed Eyes on the Humber film to be screened. Delivered in partnership between the university and marketing organisation Future Humber, Waterline launches at 9am on Monday, November 13.

Diana Taylor, managing director of Future Humber, and Louise Smith, director of Aura, said: “This event will bring together international speakers, innovative thinkers, and industry experts as well as key government figures to discuss the crucial role the Humber region must play as the UK’s biggest carbon emitter with the greatest decarbonisation potential, positioning the Humber as central to the global climate challenge facing world leaders and connecting the Humber globally.

“As we launch our fifth consecutive Waterline Summit, our first event will explore the core themes such as adaptation and resilience, sustainable finance, built environment, offshore wind, carbon capture and the energy transition.

“Aligning with the aims of COP 28, we will take a look at our regional progress made so far, discussing the progress and impact of actions taken by our local businesses and communities, as well as identifying opportunities for action where there are Gaps. Businesses large and small will come together with academics, industry experts and young people, to learn, discuss and tackle the greatest challenge of our time, as we all work together to reach net zero.”

Following on from the launch, an impact event will be held, hearing from businesses playing a key role, while exploring the opportunities offered with knowledge transfer partnerships.
