New Scunthorpe zebra crossing to make schoolkids safer after ‘regular complaints’ of near miss collisions

A new pedestrian crossing outside Scunthorpe‘s oldest school has been completed, with a ward councillor saying it was overdue.

Regular complaints have been made to Frodingham Ward councillors about near misses in Rowland Road, outside Frodingham Infants School. A brand new zebra crossing was constructed over the last week, and the road was also narrowed.

It comes after £2.4m investment in the facilities at Frodingham Infants School. North Lincolnshire Council‘s leader, Cllr Rob Waltham, acknowledged it has taken time for a crossing to be installed.

“It has been some time in the making but really pleasing to now be able to say this work is almost complete. The investment in the school was recently completed, creating a new, ultra-modern learning environment for the children – and this complements that perfectly.

“This is further evidence of levelling-up, meaning pupils and parents will be able to be safer when crossing the road to and from school – and it will help at weekends and in holidays when Rowland Road Park is packed with children and families.” As well as the new zebra crossing, the road has been narrowed and a stretch of it resurfaced, and pavements lowered. Further safety markings are to be reinstated outside the school.

“The children of Frodingham Infants school finally have a safe crossing point on the very busy thoroughfare of Rowland Road and it’s been long overdue,” said Frodingham Ward Cllr Tony Ellerby. He has campaigned for one for many years. The crossing point also links up the footbridge across the railway line with the tenfoot running to Cemetery Road.

Cllr Darryl Southern said: “As ward councillors we receive regular complaints from our residents, parents of children at the school and car drivers over near misses at this road crossing point.” He added, “One of the main issues was the width of the road, the new crossing has been well engineered and takes this into account.”

The new zebra crossing was funded by the Department for Transport. North Lincolnshire Council awarded a £77,000 contract to Hull-based PBS Construction Ltd to carry out the work.

Frodingham Infants School is the oldest school in Scunthorpe borough, originally built in the 1860s. A £2.4m refurbishment and extension to its Grade II listed building was opened in July by Scunthorpe MP Holly Mumby-Croft.
