‘No Added Sugar’ Vimto drink recalled as it contains added sugar

Bottles of Vimto drink are being recalled after being labelled with a “No Added Sugar” statement when the product actually contains added sugar.

The recall relates to certain batches of the mixed fruit flavoured soft drink. Nichols plc is recalling the bottles, saying the product is “a potential risk to consumers who need to manage their sugar intake”.

Point of sale notices will be displayed in all retail stores that are selling these products. These notices explain to customers why the products are being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the products.

The Food Standards Agency said: “If you have bought the products and need to manage your sugar intake, please do not drink them.” Customers should return a product concerned in the recall to the store from where it was bought for a full refund.

The affected Vimto bottles are as follows:

  • ‘Love The Taste’ promotional pack versions of Vimto Original – 500ml. Batch codes 4051, 4052. Best before October 2024.
  • ‘Love The Taste’ promotional pack versions of Vimto Original – 500ml. Batch codes 4073, 4074. Best before November 2024.
  • ‘Love The Taste’ promotional pack versions of Vimto Original £1.25 price marked pack – 500ml. Batch codes 4050, 4051. Best before October 2024.
  • ‘Love The Taste’ promotional pack versions of Vimto Original £1.25 price marked pack – 500ml. Batch codes 4072, 4073. Best before November 2024.

The batch codes and best before dates are located on the shoulder of the bottle in each case. The product recall notice said: “This action is being taken due to a packaging error, which has caused a limited number of bottles to be labelled with the statement ‘No Added Sugar’, despite the product within the bottles containing added sugar.

“No other batch codes or Vimto products are affected by this error. A simple way to identify whether a product is affected, is to establish whether the product has a purple cap but carries the statement ‘No Added Sugar’ as depicted above. All 500ml products with purple caps contain added sugar.”
